Last couple of months I been about to die in the mornings from Gerd. Started a 14 day supply of Prilosec and am about three days into it with very little relief so far. I have found that once I start to feel it comming on if I will drink a large glass of water real quick it will not hurt near as bad. My question is has anyone tried both and found either to be better- Nexium or Prilosec. I am beginning to think I have something more serious going on but I sure do not cherish the idea of getting a throat scope done! |

You need nexium and sucralfate(prescription). Take maalox liquid one half hour before meals. Sucralfate helps coat the mucosa lining in your throat. It heals any irritation in the esophagus lining. Its like a liquid bandaid. Edited by dayle1960, Mar 23 2012, 09:21 PM.

Thanks for the suggestions. I shall speak to my doctor about it. Like the commercials say (Ask your doctor). |

Prilosec is like a silver bullet for GERD, but as the instructions say it can take up to a week to get maximum effect. It is more of a long-term solution than a quick fix, so if you take it after eating 6 tacos and expect instant results you are going to be bummed. Be patient...it will work. It does for me. |

anyone know how these things work? Heres my Docs explanation. Stuff like Tums etc act after you have acid by absorbing it. Prilosec and most of the others act in a different way. There is these little "thingys" in your stomach that produce "stomach acid" to digest your food. Prilosec turns about 1/3 of these "thingys" off so you get less acid to begin with. Problem is that it takes time to turn these "thingys" off. for some people as long as a month, most tho within 10 days. If you find a product that acts faster then it has added stuff in it. The added stuff is great for short term but over time it becomes bad and kills the "thingys" instead of just turning them off. Note: this explanation is for the more uneducated of us who have a hard time with "Doctorspeak" |

I have very severe acid refulx with esophagal ulcers. I have tried tons of other medications and Nexium is the only one that has given me relief without needing to supplement with antiacids! I do experience headaches as a side effect but they are mild and worth the relief. |

Thanks for the information but mine ended up being a heart attack. Blockage. Stent installation and pain when away. So the diagnoses of reflux being the cause from the emergency room was incorrect. |

It depends on if your body chemistry is right or left handed. Kind of the old Vioxx or Celebrex debate. Take tums, they work instantly and a hood hand full of at least 10 of those muthas. |

Go to the health food store and buy betaine hydrochloride tablets. Most heart burn is caused by too little stomach acid. Turning off digestion will cause mineral deficiencies in the long run. |

heartburn is caused by stomach acid making it's way back up past the lower esophageal sphincter and into the esophagus, normally from too much pressure inside the stomach. things like eating too much, eating foods that take a long time to digest, being very nervous (increase acid release in the stomach) and even eating right before bed can cause it. also some people's lower esophageal sphincter just doesn't function right. no matter what the cause, the acid getting back up and out of the stomach is what makes the pain. increasing the acidity of your stomach is not going to help, it's just going to cause more damage when the acid makes it's way out. the acidity of the acid in your stomach has no effect on whether or not you get heartburn. best thing you can do is treat the cause. figure out why you are having hearth burn and treat that. my little brother had acid reflux and they put him on prilosec and it worked for him. i have been having pretty bad heartburn (several times a day, sometimes all day, every night, and after almost every meal) lately so i may have to go to the doctor pretty soon. getting tired of eating tums. |
