Hi Everybody! Just picked up a 97 2 door 3/5 with 188000 km (117500 miles) for $650 The body is in excellent shape considering I am in the rust belt, frame horns are next to mint.Interior is very clean as well.I had a 97 Swift hatch 4/5 that I drove until about 4 yrs ago (frame horn rusted out).I still have it though ,I couldnt scrap it, best car I ever had! Even with the 4 cylinder is constantly got over 50 mpg (imperial )It had 317000 km on it (198000mi) and still ran excellent and burned no oil.I put oil down the cylinders and stored it properly so I wouldnt be afraid to transplant the engine or tranny (although the synchros were getting a little tired)I also had an 88 chev sprint hatch 3/auto back in about 1990 that served me well until the rust got it...(scrapped that one though) This is an awesome site, looking forward to hanging out here a lot!I I get this new job I am hoping for I will be commuting 550 miles a week so a metro will save me lots of gas $$.I usually ride my Suzuki 650 Vstrom whenever possible as well, although I am expecting the metro to give it a run on the gas mileage front.I am about to head out to the garage to tackle the job of getting it ready for a safety check. It was cool to see both the issues I had with my 97 covered in the buyers faq (frame horns and headlights) Anyways, thanks for the great site! Thanks guys! Spent the day today going over it,wire brushing any rust underneath I could get at and coating it all in grease. As I suspected the frame horns are excellent, rockers are very good to excellent,BUT I spent too long poking in the rear wheelwells and made two softball size holes .Oh well, fortunately I have the time to patch her up.... |

Got her almost ready to drop off for the safety check! I ended up doing front rotors, calipers, pads, rear shoes (probably should have put in hardware kits too)brake fluid ,air/fuel filters, pcv valve and clean the tube. And of course while changing the filter I caused a gas line leak where the lines come down the side of the tank.Replaced the steel lines with rubber down to the filter area. I also greased the top of the tank and the area of the floor above the tank.It was actually a pretty painless job (no broken bolts) .I am going to wait for a couple tanks of gas before I do the plugs, wires cap and rotor to see if it makes any difference. Also I am going to wait to change the antifreeze till I do the water pump/timing belt and new hoses.I also intend to change the tranny fluid out with syncromesh. today the fan switch is on the list.No detents left at all and no worky Well if it comes down to I can rob the one out of my Swift in the back yard.Although all these how to's on fixing frame horns are making me want to resurrect it! Welcome to your new forum, pvwheeler! I'm glad you found the frame horn repair threads so I don't have to post them. Welding: it's an acquired skill.
