This thread somewhat relates to my issue I think. My shifter is not sloppy, but it is stiff and squeaky. It gets worse the longer I driver or the hotter the ambient temperature. Would this be from the nylon bushings at the end of the shifter causing the stiffness & squeaky noises? The squeaky noises can be heard inside pretty clearly so I figured it was the base of the shifter. Is there a remedy for this? More grease for the shifter to slide around in? |

Anyone else ever get a squeaky/stiff shifter like I'm describing above? If so, how'd you fix it? I'm guessing the grease around the base of the shifter is gone.

My wife just pointed it out to me, the squeaky shifter so I'll probably wind up repairing it this weekend. It's rather high pitched.Mine just rattles from time to time under a load.

I replaced the bushing in the parts I got UPS - Chevy had said N/A. I found a bras bushing at the local Industrial Hardware, Dormans' drawers. I switched to USS since no metric bushings there... I pressed the single bushing in after cleaning the shifter a tad ![]() then cut off the excess. Added a zirc fitting; the deal here is that you must grind the end a bit or it will run the bolt. When you grind the end the spring inside is exposed and you must peen the end again the keep it from getting lost, as above. Assembled with new nylon washers and a .5" x 1.25" shoulder bolt and nylox nut. The rod holes need a drilling for the USS bolt. ![]() Nice and tight. |
