Where does the smoke come from?

Also, what color is the smoke? If from the tail pipe, white would indicate cooling fluid leak in the engine, black would indicate too rich fuel, blue would indicate oil.

Welcome to your new forum, area50.9! :coffee

50.9 :rofl The Wife and I watched the movie Paul again last night. A laugh riot, IMHO.

Changed the PCV but cleaned the "Y" hose? Oil in the air cleaner?

Please answer the questions for more information and better diagnosis.

If the oil wasn't regularly changed then there may be blockage in the oil return passages. Next oil change add 5-6 ounces of Seafoam to the oil 300-500 miles before the oil change and it cleans the carbon out. ALSO adding some Marvel Mystery Oil to the crank case has been known to loosen stuck rings - although you have good compression. A balloon placed over the dip stick tube would inflate if there were pressure in the oil pan.

You can pull the plugs and see if they are oily. I find that poor spark from bad plugs/plug wires/distributor causes incomplete burning and smoke. Or it could be something dripping on the exhaust like from the distributor o-ring? We've even had a hole in the oil filter cause problems. :-/

Does it have oil puddled up in the air cleaner where the pcv hose hooks to it ?

Can you make it smoke by reving it up and down? If so it needs rings, the oil control rings are either worn out or stuck.

Valve stem seals smoke mostly at startup. If you're getting smoke all the time, it's rings. And you cat is most likely shot too.

do i have to take the head off or can i take off the oil pan and take out the piston and free the oil rings?

The pistons come out the top. :(

You say it "smokes at high RPMs". I think I would try using an additive to free up the oil rings before i started doing any actual work on the engine such as valve seals or pulling the head or pan.

you say it has 180 compression. That only means that the valves and compression rings are good. The oil rings could be hung up with carbon creating the smoking and you could still have good compression readings.

pull the oil filter, drain the oil out of it then refill the oil with an additive called Marvel Mystery Oil. At the same time add a few ounces of the MMO to the gas tank. For the next 2 or 3 tanks add MMO to the gas tank and top off the oil with the MMO. If the oil rings are gunked up maybe that will be all you need to free them up and stop the smoking.
