Old Man

You say it "smokes at high RPMs". I think I would try using an additive to free up the oil rings before i started doing any actual work on the engine such as valve seals or pulling the head or pan.

you say it has 180 compression. That only means that the valves and compression rings are good. The oil rings could be hung up with carbon creating the smoking and you could still have good compression readings.

pull the oil filter, drain the oil out of it then refill the oil with an additive called Marvel Mystery Oil. At the same time add a few ounces of the MMO to the gas tank. For the next 2 or 3 tanks add MMO to the gas tank and top off the oil with the MMO. If the oil rings are gunked up maybe that will be all you need to free them up and stop the smoking.

I like Old Man. :D

Marvel Mystery Oil is good stuff. It's been around since OM was a YM. :D

ahhhhh . . . I think he meant to say put in MMO with the crankcase oil. I have used 8 to 12 ounces with an oil change with very good results.

Now, for the rest of the story, save the MMO you were going to put in the fuel, and mix it with Vodka for a delicious cocktail.

Chevron Techron works even better. mwebb (another old man) even approves. BMW has their own high dollar version, but for us po' folk, Advance Auto Parts has BOGO for the 20 ounce bottles. Put 10 ounces in a full tank of fuel.

Don't forget to change your chassis fuel pump.

But wait, there's more . . .

Get yourself some really good engine oil. It makes a difference.

all the more reason to run 3 or 4 tanks of gas using MMO in the oil and gas BEFORE doing anything else at all

I had a similar problem. I bought the seals. But I never installed them. MMO!!!! If you can remove the spark plugs. Pour a little MMO in the holes. Let it sit overnight. Crank for about 10 seconds. Replace plugs. That reduced the burn by 90%. A couple of tanks of gas with MMO and some in the oil and she was cured. Valve seals smoke at start up and accelerating after a good deceleration. Consistent oil burn mean oil rings.

fwiw ..... though you say it does not have oil in the air cleaner, the chronic problem that yields the smoke you describe is the head gasket with small oil return holes. guessing .... and i think this was similar to someone else's complaint recently .... the engine was rebuilt before you got it and they experienced the smoke problem and never figured out the correction and it sat for 3 years. the good compression indicates a possible rebuild too. if so, replace the head gasket with a large holed or modified one. if the oil is not in the air cleaner however it's probably something else. good luck.
