After it was all said and done, I added a total of 10lbs in weight to my metro, and IIRC, :hmm reduced my sound by almost 30 dB at highway speeds. ^o)
done doors, floor, under hood, trunk, quarter panels and rear fenders. reduced the noise in my 'Vert, (with the top up), to less noise than my stock '07 Focus Sedan

Is there an inexpensive way to measure this? I've always thought you could do it with a laptop and microphone (for free) but have never checked into it.

They sell decibel meters at Walmart. FWIW I don't know the quality of them.

I use the app on my phone...but that's not really the most sensitive mic in the world either.

Sir Metrologist

I have an old analog craftsman meter I've owned for years, but it measures right about the same as my Harbor Freight multimeter.
Link--->Harbor Freight Multimeters; Two meters and one is a 3 cyl Tach!
Also Radio Shack has a couple of different ones for around $50

Probably not the most scientific, but it seems to get the job done. Better than "I THINK it sounds quieter it here!" :lol

It seems that when you get enough sound deadening down to notice a difference the car weighs more and gets less mpg. Harder to pull the hills. I like to add bigger and more amps to compensate for the roadnoise, but thats just my opinion. I had a lot of dynamat in my 96contacts 3/5, and i found what was more critical than what kind or how much, was WHERE you stick it. If you want bang for your buck, put what you can afford in the middle of you panels and don't bother with the floors till last if ever.
Soooo, whqt you're saying is that MAYBE 10lbs of sound deadening costs more in the MPG realm than a 50lb stereo system? Maybe I missed something in math classes, but that shit just don't add up.

He is just saying that the difference of 40 pounds to mpg, its more enjoyable to pump up the base than all the digging and placing of dampening material. I tried flex seal in my spare tire well and noticed nothing but the smell.
