I bought my wife a yellow 92 Metro Vert today. 1.0 3cyl with Auto (I know). It has 131K on the odometer but under 30K on the rebuilt motor. It is in basically good condition but needs some interior work, seats, top, radio, heater controls and window cranks need replaced. Needs the check engine light fixed to pass emissions check (supposed to be an O2 sensor) and need to have the air bag light reset as it doesn't have an air bag. It needs the rear speaker assembly too. She wanted as a DD because it costs me about $130 a week for gas for her SUV and figures this will save her (?) money. She wants to fix it up and keep it as a classic. They wanted 1500 but I got it for 1200. Hope I did good. Photos will be posted in Photo section. |

Welcome to the forum, kmvargo! The 1.0 Vert owners will chime in with their FE numbers but as a DD you should beat $130 easily. The CEL should be easy. and you may want to get an OBDII code reader off eBay for $25+ so you can read your own codes and post them here for opinions. you can clean the catalytic converter if you want: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5icTmYItwiE Best of luck! |

Welcome to the site. I am not sure how to read airbag codes on a pre-96 Metro. |

Welcome kmvargo. The vert should get about the same mileage as an auto hatchback. My 93 vert and 94 hatch get very close to the same. They are both 5 spds so won't give a fair comparison of real numbers but I am getting about 55 mpg U.S. Could you find a steering wheel from a vert to again have the airbag? The Factory Service Manual says that the SIR (air bag) code can only be reset using a Tech1 modular diagnostic system with the correct additional cartridge required for the SIR. I would scan in the diagnostic section of the manual for the SIR but there are almost 100 pages related to it so that is out. Can you remove the offending bulb? I would suggest looking for a Factory Service Manual on ebay. Best value going in any repair or service. Other manuals are as good as useless compared to the Factory one and there is not a huge difference in price. We all started out as Metro virgins so we will try to be gentle.

Thanks everyone. Yeah I might need a service manual for a few fixes. I also going to see if AutoZone still reads CEL codes. I would like to get a steering wheel with an airbag but I may just take out the bulb. |

as luck would have it, i just removed a perfectly good vert steering wheel, air bag, and clockspring assembly from my red project vert. i'm in columbus ohio. the verts are obd1 but have the air bag controls built into the ecu. i wouldn't worry about codes. the sir controls run a self check every time you switch the key on. if the system has power, sensors, and air bag in place it should clear the codes by itself. |

The air bag I am not to worried about but I live in an area where I have to get an E-Check to get plates. A CEL would fail me from getting plates.

You have a diagnostic fuse plug on the interior fuse panel. Take a spare fuse and install it in the raised empty fuse slot at the back of the fuse block and turn the key to the run position. The CEL will flash out the codes in sequence. DTC codes posted here will allow the members to walk you through troubleshooting the problem. The code can be reset by removing the taillight fuse for about 20 sec or so. It may or may not return and may allow you to get through the test. If you can't figure out which fuse is the correct one then disconnecting the battery and touching the two disconnected cables together will also reset the ECM immediately but doing it this way will lose you all your radio presets. I had a o2 sensor code earlier but I am sure now that it was caused by a bad MAP sensor so don't just go and replace parts till you give us a chance to contribute to the solution. It can get expensive using a shotgun approach and just replacing parts. The members of this forum are very knowledgeable and generous in their help to new owners trying to get the quirky little Metros ready for inspection or e-tests etc. so just work with us and your wife will have a great little gas saver.

clarkdw - finally able to work on my CEL issue. I replaced plugs, wires, distributor cap & air filter. Light was still on. It was flashing 4 and then 2. Since it was flashing and not just staying on I figured that someone else tried to fix this issue and may have left a fuse in the troubleshooting socket. I checked the fuses and there was a fuse in the raised test socket. I took it out and put it in an empty space socket. I then tried to pull the tail light fuse but it is not listed. I pulled the #3 fuse for parking lights, turn signals & instrument cluster lights and waited. After a minute I started the car, waited a minute, turned car off, put the fuse back and restarted the car. No CEL. So maybe I fixed it. Thanks for all your help. Update - Past E-Check today so now I'm good for 2 years without needing testing again. Also picked up a pair of front seats frm a 2000 4dr Metro to replace the torn ones in the car. Now I have to clean the carpet & the new seats and that will make it look better. Edited by kmvargo, Apr 17 2012, 10:49 PM.

Congrats on passing E-check. I'm moving to a state with both E checks and safety checks so I need to clear the SIR light. I'm thinking it is the clock spring. Not sure how to check. Oh it is a 95 3/5 hb. It flashes 7 times then stays lit. If you order a new muli-function switch from rockauto does it include a new clock spring? Brian |
