Just got our 98' Metro From Carmel Ca., Brought it home to Sebastopol, put the Mobil 0W-30 in the engine, Penzoil Synchromesh in the tranny, pumped up the brand new Michelins to 55 psi, took a compression test that showed 150 psi per cylinder and then installed the E3 spark plugs, stuck in a brand new air filter and drove my first week of 100 mile daily commute for a disappointing 47 mpg. After some extensive research and playing around on EBAY, I spent the $22.95 on an ELM327 bluetooth OBD2 transmitter and while waiting for that to come in the mail I downloaded the FREE Torque app. onto my droid phone. Instantly upon receiving the OBD2 transmitter plug from the mail I set it up in the Metro and found out my throttle position at an idle was set at 18%. Thanks to all of you folks here at Geometroforum.com, I already knew that it should only be 10% with the stop screw(idle screw) only holding the butterfly from jamming in the bore. The next day my MPG on the Torque App. showed an average of 58 to 60 mpg on the hwy. !!!! My next tankful penciled out to a 51mpg. average! I just took her in for a smog today with a very nice and informative smog guy off Dutton ave. in Santa Rosa that was open on a Saturday. He informed me that I passed but the 15 mph HC readings were right at the allowed 77 ppm. He suggested fuel injector or pressure regulator bleeding by (unburnt fuel). My next steps will be going through the TBI (new injector & regulator diaphram, o-rings and gaskets) and slipping in a new front crank seal, cam seal & pan gasket followed by new alternator and waterpump. (timing belt is new) Overall I am very impressed with the results from this little Metro. She is going to fit my needs to commute 100 miles a day perfectly. I was shopping for a brand new car and could not find anything that would even come close to what a Metro can do. There is not even a U.S. production car available that seats 4 passengers with anything less than a 4 cylinder that gets more than 40 mpg. My friends with hybrids are getting 44 mpg, hell, I was getting 43 in my saturn SL SOHC that we bought for $2000 and my wife now drives! and then they will be spending about $8k on a new battery every 10 years. I just want to say that I love your site and thank you everyone for your postings. I will try and post my hurdles and things I learn. P.S. its kinda funny that in my younger years I collected 59' fords and my last Ford Fairlane had a 428 CJ with two Holley 4 bbl carbs that ran a 12.90 in the quarter mile and now I am having fun playing with a little 3 cyl. import! Times are a changin' !!!!!! |

Captainharbarth, you are gonna love this forum almost as much as you will love your Metro. Now that you know how much info and help there is it does nothing but get better. There seems to be lots of us who used to love hearing the carbs almost suck the hood into the big v-8 but now enjoy sharing mpg numbers as much as we used to love comparing ET's. Welcome

Welcome to the forum, Captainharbarth! Most of the things you did to your 428 Fairlane you can do to your Geo if you wish. Header, glasspack, performance cam, suspension, just like a lot of us have done for fun.

Welcome aboard! I've still got a fuel sucking pig in the form of an 86 Suburban - I just save it for when it's the appropriate tool for the job. Filled with Boy Scouts and backpacks it's mighty hard to beat as a crew hauler... The rest of the time the Metro wins hands down! |

Welcome aboard. All of what you says sounds great, except..... for the oil pan gasket replacement. Don't do that. Use black RTV instead. Several prior postings will back up my statement. You have a crank sensor on your engine that usually doesn't read well after a gasket replacement. Post pics of your ride when you get a chance. |
