Just bought 93 convertible. 1L engine/auto. Engine smokes (slight/moderate). tends to stall when hot. Low power at low RPM. Can drive 75 to 80 MPH. Cleaned CPV/ and hoses. What should I try next. Bought new plugs and matching plug socket/wrench. Socket does not seem to reach plugs. Should there be a step in ID around plugs? Step seems to keep socket from reaching plugs. Did they sell me the wrong plugs? what size wrench should the Geo sparkplugs take?

Should also mention that I believe car has been pretty much parked since 2004. 65K on odometer and odometer does work currently. |

Complete a compression check on all 3 cylinders then report back to us. |

I'll try tomorrow if auto zone has loaner to test. Does the tester seal in spark plug hole. Is it tested just by turning ignition with one plug out at a time? |

Welcome to your new forum, pat Mcvay! Take a look at How To - Compression Test. Plugs: NGK, Traditional spark plug; BPR6ES-11 or V-power spark plug; BPR6EY-11 are recommended. You might want to replace the plug wires, distributor cap and rotor. I like the more expensive cap with brass posts if one is available to you (O'Rilley's). I'd drive the car over to where you got the parts and don't leave until they have sold you a spark plug wrench that fits in the head and a nice set of NGKs. |

Ask AutoZone guy for a quick tutorial on how to use a compression tester, or look on youtube. You should remove the fuel injector fuse from the block under the hood, and crank the engine with your foot on the gas pedal, all the way to the floor. Crank the engine until the compression gauge shows the maximum pressure. I usually count 20 "puffs", just to make sure. Most of the compression testers screw into the spark plug hole. In my opinion, a "wet" compression test is a waste of time. If you get good numbers, like 155ish and higher, you're pretty good. 170's are better. If you get "the usual" 30's or 110's, not so good, especially if the 3 cylinders are not close to the same number. Post here. We'll be waiting . . .

Compression test results are dry/wet. 160/193 176/192 145/167 These readings don't look too bad to me. Any thoughts. Changed plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. runs better and acceleration is better but still pops (light backfire) when RPM drops quickly. Exhaust system is shot could this be a contributing factor? Still light to moderate smoke. Hard to start when warm. Temperature stays steady at midrange. Bought seafoam and will try to run through vacuum tomorrow. What should I try after that? |

Additional info. I know the car has only ran 500 miles in the last 2 and a quarter years (oil change sticker). Lots of setting in the garage. Hopefully just running it will loosen something up and improve performance. |

Run Marvel Mystery Oil, Seafoam, Alphabet oil, and just give it hell for a few hundred miles and see if anything happens. |

FYI, the compression test was run cool. Engine had noit run in 2 to 3 hours. Not sure how this effects the readings. Any thoughts. |

Already has Marvel and Seafoam in oil. Has Seafoam in gas. What is the alphabet oil you mentioned? |

It's just some good oil. Mobil 1 0w40 is my favorite flavor. I would run it like it is in all honesty. Give it a couple tanks of gas and see if anything clears up. Are the hoses on your throttle body warm? I would flush the radiator for good measure too. How dark is your oil? Run it till it gets black. Pour some MMO into each spark plug hole and let it sit overnight. Then, with the plugs out, turn the engine over a few times with rag over each spark plug hole to flush the MMO out. Install spark plugs and go for a spirited drive. |

I will try the MM in the spark plug holes when I get a chance. Not sure if EGR hose is hot. Will have to check that. |

Throttle body, not EGR. (someone with more time will chime in the difference here in a second) They are the two hoses on the passenger side of the throttle body/intake manifold. |
