So, I'm in the Nashville, TN area. I currently own a 2004 Nissan Maxima. (Gas Guzzler). I am actually going to be getting rid of it in the next few months. I plan on finding a nice metro hatch and use the money from the sale to restore it. I want a couple of things tho. I would like for anyone to chime in. I want the most efficient vehicle, if possible. Which generation got the most mpg? I know they started putting a 4 cyl in at a certain point, (so I'd probably prefer a 3 cyl) and I know they were re-branded as Chevy at a certain point. Does anyone have any tips? I would appreciate it. Thank you. |

Welcome aboard! You should start your reading here with the buyers guide http://geometroforum.com/topic/1666576/1/ If fuel mileage is your highest goal then you might want to persue the xfi version, I believe made from 89-94 someone will chime in shortly to confirm this. Xfi's are tougher to find, have somewhat less power than the standard trim level Metro and command a premium price. If you can't find an xfi then the next highest fuel mileage choice would be an 89-94 base metro 3 cylinder 5 speed (this can be made xfi like). Then the 96 and beyond 3 cylinder 5 speed metros followed by the 4 cylidner 5 speed metros and last in line (fuel mileage wise) is any engine combo (3 or 4 cylinder) paired to an automatic transmission. Automatics are generally hard on fuel mileage with the rule of thumb being a similarly equipped car will yield approx 10 mpg less with an automatic when compared against a 5 speed - Your mileage WILL vary! |

What he said except he forgot the '95 3 cyl 5 speed which, mpg-wise is the same as the '96 and later 3/5's. |

For max mpgs on the 95+ models, get a 3 cyl and swap in a 5 spd tranny from a 95+ 4cyl, 5 spd. The 4 cyl tranny has a taller gear ratio than a 3 cyl and makes about 4-5 mpgs better than the 3 cyl tranny. |

Question for everyone. I might have found an 89 XFI in good condition. Any tips or gotchas I should look out for on this specific model? What's a reasonable price if the car is stated to have 96k miles, new brakes, new clutch, new water pump, timing belt, new rims. He's saying $1800 or best offer. Oh, and he says it has two small rust spots. One on the door, and one on the roof of the car. I just want an idea of what to look for before going out to see it. Thanks(and sorry if this is not posted on the right forum) |

Where is the car located? If in the salt belt you will need to check the frame horns ( where the control arms attach) as well as the floor. You should check the compression and have some one follow you while doggiing the shit out of it to see if it smokes. |

The car is in Middle Tennessee(Nashville). I don't have the tools to do the compression test unfortunately. I can definitely have a friend go with me as I test drive it to follow me and scope out any smoke, etc. Thanks for the idea. |

That is the plan. I'm communicating with it's current owner. I'd like to set up a time this weekend to go and see it, etc. Especially if the body has no rust, It looks like a great candidate for a full vehicle restore

jump on it!!! resto-mod is the way to go with these little cars. you can really change the vehicle into what works best for you with just a little customizing. |

Welcome here If your looking for the most mileage, the xfi would be it. Look over the buyers guide (link on the front page), verify compression is over 150 across all 3, verify transmission shifts , and no electrical gremlins, you should be good at that price.
