hi c+b, if none of the proposed fixes work, you will probably need to replace the head gasket ... you can check for the 'oil check valve' while the head is off of course. i'm guessing the former owner? rebuilt the engine or head and found the white cloud / fart problem and could not figure it out ... and let it sit. the head gasket needs to have the 'large oil return holes' or needs to be modified if it has small holes. many threads on this forum re this problem. it's a relatively simple fix and all the other conditions suggest you'll have a good vehicle. I likely just solved the same issue with my 1994 Metro. It was running great otherwise but would smoke on the interstate like a mosquito fogger everytime it did an oil fart. I had 3 of these in 2 days and it seemed to be a bigger issue under load when climbing a hill. The PCV hose was burping oil into the air cleaner area and then down into the throttle body causing a huge cloud of smoke. Put half a can of Seafoam in your oil and let the car idle at normal temps for a while. Some suggest running 500 miles or so with this but it dissolves so much crap I only would do this for a day at most. Remove your brake booster line and suck some Marvel Mystery Oil or MMO for short into the system. It will go right into your intake and then into the engine. You will get lots of SMOKE! Don't worry about this as it is normal. It will run really bad the more you put in. Let it die out on you and stop adding this so you don't hydrolock the engine. Let it sit overnight. Fire it up the next day and expect lots of smoke for a while. Start driving it and drive it for a day or so. When you come home, repeat the process of sucking in cleaner through the brake booster line. Use the other hald of the Seafoam this time and let it die. It will be smoking again like crazy. Let it sit about 20 minutes and then fire it back up and drive it until the smoking stops. Come home and drain the oil and replace the filter. Use the oil Glenn suggested if you can find it. Otherwise use a good synthetic 5W30. Take the car out and drive it like you stole it! You will find out real quick if the car is going to smoke again or not. I did this with mine and got it up to 87 mph on a straightaway. I had the thing floored for quite a while under load and there was no smoke! I am not sure what happened. Either I solved a blowby issue by unsticking a ring, or the oil drainback holes had crud in them that the cleaner dissolved or there was a little bit of each going on. I only checked compression after running all these cleaners and it was fine so I don't know where I was starting from with the oil smoke issue. Conor |
