i bought a 93 4 door 3/5 that a woman said it had broke a timing belt while driving...i tow it home put on a new timing belt and set my timing fire it up and it has a "miss" to it were it just dosent run right ...when you give it gas sounds like someone gurgling when they brush their teeth. so i figure i have my iming off a tooth...i recheck every thing and my timing is dead on. i have a mechanic look at it with me and he says to check compression... so the 2nd and 3rd piston have 165 psi and the 1st one has 110 psi. He then says if its your rings you can put a little oil down the spark plug hole on top of the piston an it should bring the compression back up. so we do that and check compression on #1 again and this time its only 115...so he says youve got a bent or burnt valve on you 1st piston....my question is does this sound right? i bought a whole new head with camshaft that has been rebuilt and i have access to a whole motor. which should i do, swap the whole engine or just swap out the head |

Sounds like you've burnt an exhaust valve in cylinder #1, that will require replacement, at 165 the other cylinders are nearing the factory minimum of 156 psi so I'd say it's time for a rebuild. If you try to do just the head you will very likely wind up burning copious amounts of oil and fogging for mosquitos. Not the best return for your efforts. Time to get your spare motor rebuilt and then swap it in. We'll be here to help. Good Luck! |

I like that answer."...when you give it gas sounds like someone gurgling when they brush their teeth." I'd like a video, please - just for entertainment. No, seriously, a video would help, if there's another problem. The compression numbers would go up if the throttle were held wide open (How To Compression Check) but you are still looking at a problem and probable rebuild. You can "T" a vacuum gauge at the MAP sensor-TB hose and check your vacuum which should be 18"-20" and not flutter (valves). Here's an example: How To Vacuum Check. |
