Electric fan; Testing

I have run my metro in the driveway for up to a half an hour or so temp guage shows midway operating temp non contact thermometer shows 185-195 on surfaces. I get the same results after a 20 mile drive to work at 35-60 mph pull into shop and check temps but have never seen or heard the electric fan run . When does it come on? or supposed to come on? Or how can I trick it to come on to test its operation. With summer cominf we can see daytime temps to 100 and would hate to burn up an engine because of a bad fan. Thanks in advance and after the geos recent encounter with an F150 it will be restored and maybe get a few upgrades in the process. First off straighten out the body damage and then if funds allow the motor is getting overhauled top to bottom. Chris

The fan won't come on until coolant temp hits ~205 if I remember correctly. Consequently you will rarely hear it run and it is not set up to run once the key is off regardless of coolant temp. So once you turn the key off the fan stops.

If you want to reassure yourself that the fan works find the coolant sensor on the Thermostat housing (has two wires going to it) with the key off unplug the connector and jumper across the two wires, then turn key on (past accessory to on) and the fan should run, turn the key off and the fan should stop. Once you feel better, remove the jumper, reinstall the connector on the sensor and go back to enjoying driving your Geo. Good Luck!

If you have the car parked you can get the fan to come on by revving the engine a little. Takes a few minutes though.

tried that after driving home from work one afternoon had it parked and put a block on the throttle for higher rpm's for 10-15 mins stood there with my non contact ir thermometer and still read all surfaces minus exhaust manifold at around 180-195 no fanever came on

On a Mission from God

or, after a 30 minute drive I pull in a gas station to get todays paper, I leave the key on, engine off and when I return I notice the fan kicks in.

lol these cars dont make enough heat to need the fan in temps lower than 80 degrees. unplug the fan and run a jumper wire straight to the battery that would be the sure fire way to tell.
