G10 knocks at start up

I'm pulling my hair out trying to decifer this enigma that is my 94 Metro. Then engine decided to start knocking at start up one day. At first it was a few seconds but gradually got longer. Without going into to much gorie detail I swapped the head off of my engine with bad rings and it worked....for one day! It sat for two weeks prior to swapping the head. And untill about an hour ago it had sat about 36 hours and the knocking was shorter than it was the last time I ran it. Man I hope that was a thourough enough description of my problem and that someone knows EXACTLY what the frank is wrong with this thing!

And, the bad news is . . . your engine is knocking. This is not normal.

Could be a broken piston skirt, or a rod that has a loose cap, or worn out rod bearings, or main bearings.

LMAO I had a Kawasaki 750 engine do that to me...All I had left was the head everything else was scrap metal. FYI never buy from SBT haha

Well this is my first attempt at a car engine and I dont know what a piston skirt is so hopefully someone can explain...Yes I can post a video to you tube and then I will post a link here. really I was hoping someone would say oh its the oil pump just replace it LOL. Also while I'm here....there are scratches that you can see but cannot feel on the journals to the fore mentioned engine with bad rings. Should I have it turned? Please say no I already bought a rebuild kit off ebay with std bearings LOL I know I'm going to get scolded here but I have a tendencie to jump in with both feet without testing the water first! Thanks again for the great responses

Do you see the bolt in this pic? What has happened is that the nut which tightens that bolt has fallen off, thus the rod connecting cap is loose which makes the rod slap on the crankshaft. Your engine is dying a slow death. I recommend you do not start your engine any more because you will only continue damage the internals of you block. Pull the oil pan off and inspect the connecting rod nuts. Maybe you can salvage a bad situation by reinstalling the nut that has fallen off. That is the "best" scenario. The worst scenario is that you will need an entire bottom end rehab. :(

Just for grins, could you check the oil level before you pull the pan. I wonder if you are suffering from oil starvation. Would be an interesting tid bit of information so we could store it in the dark recesses of our minds for future information.

I was about to tear into my wife's '96 and then I used my mechanic's stethoscope to track the noise to the EGR valve. I took it off and the gasket was broken. Cost all of $1.57 to fix.

Well still havent pulled the pan life took over so now I'm back at it...Yes oil level is full I check it everyday. I do believe its oil starvation. I have the hole time. I just can figure out why. it pumps oil, I can see it pumping oil to the head when the valve cover is removed. You dont need a stethoscope to find the noise it is undoubtedly coming from the block.

Dumb question - did it start after an oil change? Could it be the oil filter anti-drainback valve doesn't work and that sound is just during the time the oil filter takes to fill back up?
