yea the wheel could technically come off. the reason they dont want you reusing it is because when you put it back on the area where it is staked to the keyway is damaged and might not be good enough to retain the nut. sometimes you can get away with swapping the nuts from both sides and the staked area might tighten to a different spot on the spindle giving you a fresh area to stake to the keyway. |

Shooooooot, I've reused my staked nut for so long it no longer has any stakeing material left. Just go to the PnP and grab a couple off a dead metro. And yes, if the nut comes off while driving, you will be left stranded on the side of the road. |

The Wheel will pop off and take the wheel drum off with it. |

I am wondering why that nut is too costly compared to other nuts...what is so special in it? |

I've reuse more than a dozen times; no problems so far. It's a concern about the spot where you tap it down to stake it in. I know of no other concern. |

Re-used many times here too. They pull a rear wheel during their annual "safety inspection" and you can be darn sure they aren't springing for the price of a replacement. If you are concerned throw a little loctite on the nut when you replace it then you'll have some redundancy with the staked part and the loctite keeping it in place. |

Why did they start using those things and stop using good old castle nuts and cotter pins? |

Probably to save touch time and eliminate an inventory bin. FWIW, I've reused mine a bunch - front ones more than the back as the back shoes last FOREVER. You can swap them from side to side and likely line up on a different location of the nut to peen over. Blue loctite too if you're worried. Edited by JellyBeanDriver, Apr 27 2012, 11:23 PM.

The only time I've ever replaced those nuts is on the front axle, and only because new ones came with replacement half shafts. Otherwise, I've reused them many times. Torque to spec, and make sure you stake again. |

Yeah, those suckers cost $9 each from napa in 2014. I took a drum off not knowing about this bummer just to investigate a noise. Fortuanately was able to tighten nut more then it had been and so got a new place to dimple. Not too cool though, means someone didn't tighten very well and my other side may be loose. Still, will need to do brake job soon and that will add 18 bucks to job. Maybe will be able to switch nuts as recomended here but now maybe not. I just used the only punch I have, maybe a 1/4" flat end but it creates a lot off damage. A narrower punch might not be strong enough. Point here is that if you could make a nice neat small depression it would increase chance of being able to reuse safely. Anybody know a good way? |

All the more reason to also keep re-using old drums over and over to let a nice deep lip get built up to hold it on... just in case the nut does come off?
