Hiya I've been looking for a good metroswift for a while now, I've read your forums obsessively and I'm real glad I haven't found one yet. Because it became clear to me I didn't know jack about these cars. My high MPG cars in the past have been festivas and Aspires, but The last festiva I had beat the crap out of me and the last aspire I had was an automatic slug. But, they did get 45+ and 38MPG respectively and they were super cheap to fix. I find a lot more MetroSwifts around for sale, an aspire around here is tough.... few and far between, and often been beat mostly to death. So I have to abandon the head full of stuff I know about AspireFestivas and learn to speak MetroSwift. From reading your how to guides and other tech forums, I think I like the MetroSwifts better. More interchangeable parts around for one thing. So.. I'm going to look at another one tomorrow, a 95 Suzuki Swift. The guy swears it has no rust and runs great, but I'm still taking an icepick and a compression tester. If he is telling the truth, I'll probably buy it. If he's jerking my chain, I'm gonna be pretty .It's inspected until the end of the yr and it has 170K on it. I wouldn't think too much about 170k on a festiva or an Aspire, how's 170K on a 95 swift that "has no rust" the check engine light is off (with valid stickers, safety and emissions) and "runs great"? Assuming the engine isnt hemorrhaging oil all over the place.... I forgot to ask about that one. Still from what I read here, if the frame is clean and it runs pretty much "good", it's worth putting a few more buck in for any unforeseen repairs down the road, right? I have cash, an icepick, and a compression tester. Let's rock. |

Welcome to your new forum, Nyquil-Junkie! "Still from what I read here, if the frame is clean and it runs pretty much "good", it's worth putting a few more buck in for any unforeseen repairs down the road, right? " That's about it. Good luck tomorrow. Usually oil on the transmission will be from the $1 distributor o-ring. Oil dripping from the timing cover will be crank or cam seal (usually caused by the PCV valve) and "easily" fixed. Still, those would be bargaining chips to lower the price.

Yeah the Mazda B engines in aspires and festivas do the same thing, the distributor weeps and the valve covers bleed. For the price this guy is asking ($2600) I'm gonna point at every flaw and whine. There is a guy close to me with a 94 they want 3k for it. I might go check that one out too. for 3k it better be super spotless and talk dirty to me while I drive it. |

He didn't email me back, I think I freaked him out when I asked if it was ok to go over the underside with a slag hammer. Hey, if you're 3k confident it's solid, you'd say go ahead, right? lol |

There is an Xfi for 2800 bucks, w/35k original on it too. I dont feel like driving 250 miles west to see. 14 mpg in an F-150 is painful. Edited by Nyquil-Junkie, Apr 24 2012, 10:08 PM.

I'm impressed. This one turned out to be really nice. New tires/brakes/steering parts, nice clean paint job, undercoated and solid. No interior damage, good exhaust system... everything works. Engine starts right up, idles quiet and smooth, no smoke. The engine looks 100% dry and no leaks. PLUS, it smells good, no chain smoker owners. I was fortunate enough to get there when the guy had both front wheels and knuckles off, putting tie rods and bushings on it & a few other new bits. So, I look at the controller arm supports, the drivers side has 2 holes in the bottom I can almost put a finger in. I pointed it out to the guy and he agreed to let me pick and poke it some more. Looks like good metal around the holes, very weldable tiny patches. I said "can I hit it with a hammer?" this nice dude hands me a hammer... I beat all over the supports, good solid metal all around. I move to the passengers side. New undercoating. I picked a little at it, and it's a good, but obvious weld job. I asked if he minded if I scraped off and poked that side. He says sure go for it.After a few min of poking and scraping, we find a very nice welding job, 2 small patches and the hammer tells me good solid metal all around. Good thing he had those wheels off. It made this a lot easier. We came to a substantially lower figure than he was asking. I pick it up tomorrow, pending a good test drive to check the trans. and engine & such. I think, I can stop shopping now. Cold AC and inspected until Dec. This is the best one I've actually ever seen.

In a few months when I'm convinced it's nt gonna blow up fall apart or something (new car paranoia...) the first thing (after the frame patches) it will need is a trailer hitch. I need a small 4x6 to carry @ 12 bales of hay once a month. From the "hitch" threads here I think it can handle that job easy. The type design and instillation method.... something I need to think about. of course, pics and "lookie what I did!!" threads will follow.

Thanks! I drove it home today, @ 70 miles, the gas gauge didnt move by much. I can get used to this real fast. I stopped to get it aligned and as luck would have it, the left ball joint is a little too lose for them to get it to stay put I saw them both off in the guys garage and the right one was tight, the left one was a little wiggly but I didnt think it was too bad. 60 bucks on Ebay and I scored a left/right set with free shipping. I might as well do them both. Other than that, it drove on the highway like butter. Surprisingly quiet. I didn't notice until then it had a brand new radio/cd/mp3 player. And all 4 speakers actually work. It has a lot of guts for such a little car. My brother calls it a Juice box, I said why? he said "if someone hits you in that thing all they will find of you is juice" I might replace the "swift" decal with a "juicebox" decal. I also noticed today it has a brand new radiator, master cylinder, and a few other parts under the hood. Edited by Nyquil-Junkie, Apr 26 2012, 08:23 PM.

Go for the decal Being juice you won't have to worry about how bad your beloved Geo looks, cutting yourself at the pick-n-pull getting replacement parts, dealing with the insurance company, getting endless sympathy, and listening to "I told you so." a hundred times. Show your brother the video in this thread Geo Metro Abuse Caught On Tape. Edited by Bad Bent, Apr 27 2012, 12:22 PM.

That's pretty funny... looks like the stuff my nephew and his buddies do out on the farm with cars. I found a thin spot on the drivers side control arm support and hit it with a slag hammer. Oh man.... the little not so bad hole turned out to be a bigger omgwtf hole. I'm going to raise it up tomorrow and give it a good righteous beating with the slag hammer, and see how bad it really is. These patches are gonna be a little bigger and more.... complicated. Crap. My nephew is a pretty talented welder with a much better rig than my stick welder, looks like I have to dig deep in my pocket and pay him to do it for me. At least he'll do it right, I was just gonna do it 'good enough'. jeeze what a mess. |

I'd still say it sounds like you got a deal if that is the worst thing you have found wrong with it
