I landed a gas saver yesterday after looking for months. The ideal car was not to be found in my price range here in Ca. I opted for a 99 sedan 4cyl/auto with air. It was an unmolested example that needs a little tlc( broken mirror, air not blowing cold, radio gone), but with just 100 K on it's clock, already smogged, and in my price range($1800) I went for it. It hummed home on the freeway at 65 with no problem. I will have to get used to armstrong steering again LOL. Will still be looking for a 3cyl/5speed/air, but for right now clean examples are running $3200+ and they are gone when you call arrrrgh. This web site has been a big help already while I was searching and I know it will be invaluable in the future Thanks for a great site and very knowledgeable members |

I took some pics. http://s457.photobucket.com/albums/qq292/1980r65/metro/ Made a junk yard run and got the little pieces I needed: ..... ..both side mirrors, ....... the bezel that goes around the radio/ashtray ........both window crank nobs. ........ seat belt female portion, one was broken installed the stuff to make it a "complete car". I had to get the buffer out and shine the headlight lenses, there was almost no light escaping LOL I have a can of old aluminum polish paste and it cleans up headlights pretty good and I don't have to spend $25 on a "power ball kit" I got it for my son so he could afford to keep his job. He was putting $500 a month in his car with the 85 mile commute. He drove it for 3 days and the running around I did put 336 miles on the car and it took 7 gallons even to fill it up again...... that equates to 48 mpg, so something is wrong. I was hoping for 32 and would have been way happy at anything above 35. I don't believe 48 mpg is attainable with a 1.3 4cyl with automatic from everything I had been reading. I will check the odometer and make sure he didn't stick in $10 buck worth along the way. It is a tight lil car and hasn't been messed with other than the radio was stolen( that's where the broken bezel came in).... I'm happy with the $1800, anything less would have been a real steal, and if she had cleaned it up and fixed the mirrors she could have gotten $2400 in this area at this time..... they are in demand. See you all in the tech section as I get the lil guy completely back on it's feet. Joe Riverside, CA Edited by wilcom, May 3 2012, 08:52 PM.

Welcome wilcom (why do I feel as if I'm in the movie "Airplane"?) Could be you just didn't get it as full as you did last time. When the numbers are small, a slight discrepancy makes a large difference at the other end. Wait until you've got three or four tanks gone before really getting critical. You're right though, 38 would be more believable, unless you've got a really patient kid. |

48 is possible. Depending on where and how he's driving. I used to get @50 on long highway trips in my festiva with a mazda 1.3L with no mods but a decent tune up. Sometimes they surprise you. |

Sure, it's possible. But with a kid driving, first tank of gas on a just purchased four cylinder automatic sedan, it seems unlikely. |

I found out later, the last day he drove it home from work, he stuck $10 bucks in it. I recalculated with 2.5 more gallons and it works out to be 35mpg, I'm still happy. The neighbor spent $27,000 to make 32MPG LOL |
