Hey everyone...I'm new here.
Got a 92 metro as is for $300. I put oil in it and tried to start off of jumper cables and now there's a huge puddle of oil on the ground. There's a lot of oil in the area of the oil filter especially. I know this is bad but I knew when I got the car that the engine was probably bad. I need to know how I should start troubleshooting this so that I can get the parts that I need and fix it.
If anyone has any advice, I would appreciate it, Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. If it were mine, I would wash it and verify where the leak is comming from before I done any work.

If I were to need a new block, how difficult would that be to source? Any ideas?

Grr

first check the PO might have been a dimwith and not put the filter on all the way. you might be surprised.

clean it up real good and VERIFY before you yank anything.

I would not bother getting a block. just yank a used engine and drop it in. one day project if you don't anything like it before (and it sounds like you might have)

then rape the original engine for anything useful :-)

The oil filter might have no gasket, or be the wrong filter and not fit right.

People do some strange things to cars and then dump them because they are "broken".

Someone once gave me a nice car, it wouldnt start, the guy who had it said he tinkered with it and gave up, bought a new car.

The gas gauge was broken, on a half tank. I drove that car for about 2 yrs it ran great.... after I put some gas in it.
lol

Occam's razor; All things being equal, the simple explanation is often the right one.

Welcome aboard! Could be as simple as the plug being left out of the oil pan... Keep us updated. Good Luck!

Thanks for the good advice.
I found out when trying to start it, before I realized that it wouldn't hold oil, that the engine will not turn AT ALL...So I'm pretty sure the PO ran it without oil and seized the engine. BTW I checked for leaks before trying to start...the oil didn't come out until I tried to start it. It did look like the oil was coming out of the oil filter. Going to check all that first.
I'd rather try my hand at a rebuild than just dropping in another motor. Seems like a good engine for a first try rebuild. Then when I'm done I know its good for awhile, whereas a junkyard motor could go at any time. That's my thinking anyway.

Will post pictures later tonight...have to use my laptop.

Welcome to your new forum, RUG3Y! :coffee

Our member cnr_dogs lives in Burley and I am in McCall, looking to move out.

I have a worn engine, in McCall, so you'll have to be desperate and I don't get to Boise that often.

Sounds like you have a handle on the problem. Keep us updated and here are a few engine build threads.

Welcome aboard! I'd jack it up and spray a whole can of brake cleaner underneath her skirt and come back in an hour and check for holes

Bad bent,
That's awesome to hear...other metro people here in southern Idaho. Depending on what you want for the motor, I'd be willing to come out to McCall on Saturday. I can't afford a LOT but if its a good deal I'm inclined to go that way and rebuild the old one at my leisure. I you want to sell a motor, PM me with the price. I've been looking for an excuse to drive that way anyway.

Thanks for the good advice guys. This seems to be a really friendly community and I'm really excited about the whole metro thing.

And here's my other triple, a Suzuki GT550, which has the same motor as the first Suzuki 3 cyl car, grandfather to the Metro:
