I just made a oil pan gasket out of black permatex about two hours ago, I already put oil in it, and started it for about 30 seconds how long should I waite to drive it? I want to make sure it is sealed and does not leak. I did not buy a pre made gasket , I only used permatex? thanks |

Permatex Ultra-Black? Or, regular black? I usually use Red. I've used all the others. Believe it or not, red works very well. I like to wait at least two days when I use the red. Ultra black seems to cure a bit faster than the red. Don't get in a hurry. When the extruded bead is hard, you'll be ready to drive. |

Give that Ultra-Black an overnight cure. You can smear a thinish glob of the stuff on a piece of paper as a test sample. When the sample's cured, you're good to go.

I like the red. Easier to spot gaps. |

I used both and both are good. I usually start the car right after installation and never had a leak. |

Like Johnny I too have started up right after using it but the truth is there is curing instructions on the label and giving it time to cure is better. I prefer the grey myself, http://www.permatex.com/products/automotive/automotive_gasketing/gasket_makers/auto_Permatex_Ultra_Grey_Rigid_High-Torque_RTV_Silicone_Gasket_Maker.htm |

In the old days when silicone sealer first came out you had to wait for it to cure. The uncured silicone would kill oxygen sensors. All the good quality automotive silicone made in the last 20 years should be ready to go as soon as you are ready to drive. |
