Hey everyone One of my Soldiers decided he wanted to get a Metro because he likes mine so much. I told him to let me know when he found one to look at, I wanted to go with him. He cashed out everything he could spend (1200), and we went and looked at one. It was beat up, had several accidents, had rear-ended and gone under the bed of a truck, and looked like genuine crap. The guy wanted 1300, and I had to force my guy to walk away. He was having second thoughts, but I convinced him he made the right decision. The next day, he found a 1999 lsi 4-door, and bought it. The good news is that it looks absolutely beautiful, inside and out, and has about 100,000 miles. The guy told him the timing belt was slipping (cough cough bs! cough cough). I took a look at the engine and it didnt seem like it could be that at all. We started removing spark plugs, and the second one just lifted out. Apprarently, the thing had been cross-threaded in there and had blown out, with the threads, but was held into place by the coil bolted over it. So here I am, I've got to get the head off and re-thread that hole, and replace the timing belt while I'm at it, since he has one anyway. Can someone please walk me through the steps, including the proper torque and tightening order? Or point me in the right direction? I've been searching and can't find anything for this car, since it's really not a "Geo." I've neer removed/installed a head before, and I need all the help I can get. I saw some stuff for a 97, which is what I have, but this engine appears to be totally different, at first glance. Please help!!! (I'll post a pic of me towing his chevy metro with my geo metro. America!!!!) |

Is this a 3 cylinder or 4 cylinder engine? |

Gotta be a four, since he said the coil was holding the plug in. Oh yeah, four door, has to be a four cylinder. Head bolt tightening sequence is not critical, just start in the middle and and work your way out toward the ends as if you were circling around the engine waiting to land. I think it's 54 lbs/ft, but I gave my books away so someone else is going to have to verify. Tighten them all up snug, then go to 30 lbs/ft, then up to 54 lbs/ft. You need a new gasket and maybe new bolts, not sure about that one. |

Ive used those thread repair kits on one of my 01's. You can leave the head on to install it. Just a little bit of a bitch working in the recess. If you take the head off, get a complete head gasket set and replace the valve stem seals, I can tell you how to do it without special tools. When you do the timing belt, replace the waterpump and the timing belt tensioner pulley. Also, the diagram in the Haynes repair manual is wrong, I posted how the cam pulley should be positioned somewhere here. |
