Hey Guys! I figured I should start a project thread since I am pretty much repairing/replacing/rebuilding everything on this car. I am new to the forum and to Geos so I've been learning a lot. I've posted a few questions in the engine section and you've all been super helpful. I hope to get a bunch of pictures up as this thing progresses. I bought it about a month ago for $1200. At the time I thought it was a The seller was firm on that price and I figured that after looking for a month and being out of a car for that time, along with the great gas mileage, the price was ok. It had 232,000 miles on it though. It is a 3 cyl, 5-speed. I drove it back home from Clearwater to Tallahassee and noticed the temp would hover around 3/4 to jut under redline. ( I hadn't noticed that before because I couldn't get it up to speed in the development where I was looking at it) Needless to say, it urked me. I didn't smell anything that would indicate it was really that hot though, which made me wonder if the gauge was accurate. In the end, I realized the cooling fan was not coming on. (The gauge may still be inaccurate) Since then I've narrowed it down to the ECU or the pin socket in the wire plug going into the ECU. The exterior is in rough shape. Needs a little help. The project is: rebuild the engine put an econo cam and +10 sprocket in it clean everything up in the engine bay and paint the engine the 5th gear in the transmission whines-replace 5th gear/flush and syncromesh it new tie rods/ tie rod ends new clutch/cable new front wheel bearings new brakes new hatch struts new sun visors new mirrors new vent toggles paint the dash (fix cooling fan issue or wont be able to drive it anywhere, especially with newly built engine )Re-finish and paint car Hopefully I'll be out before too long!I'll keep ya posted! |

Best of luck! It's still a good deal since it probably doesn't have rust on the frame horns. |

Start with the cooling fan issue. There is a temp sensor on the thermostat housing with a 2 wire plug on it, disconnect the plug - jumper across the wires, turn the key on and the fan should come on. If the fan comes on the issue is with the sensor, if the fan doesn't come on then the issue lies in the wiring or in the fan itself. ECMs are pretty robust in these cars so a failure is not common. |

Thanks! Before I pulled the engine I did everything I could to troubleshoot it. The engine coolant temp sensor is new, the wiring from the sensor to the ECU has continuity, the relay is good, the fan works when jumped to the battery, the rest of the wiring is good because the fan comes on when I unPlug the engine coolant temp sensor, the thermostat is new. The only thing I can see that may cause it is some wiggle room in the plug going into the ECU. When I went to check continuity I had to wiggle the probe some To get it to contact.

Yes, a bad connection will cause you problems. It should be clean and secure.Rather than a continuity check try a voltage drop. Here is the mwebb test: Voltage Drop You can test the voltage at the CTS and it should be the same at the ECU. ie no voltage drop. |

![]() my little mechanic and i taking Mattro's engine out ![]() still working... ![]() it's out!! ![]() ![]() The head ready to get resurfaced ![]() block ready for boring and machine work ![]() a little lip on there ![]() wow! the EGR was full of crud! ![]() new tie rods and ends ![]() a little corrosion spot that worried me a little ![]() new paint ![]() block bored .020 over, head bolt holes have heli-coils and oil & coolant passages cleaned, as well as new o/s pistons ready for install ![]() the innards...all new bearings ![]() checking the ring end gap, which was .015 out of the box...so i went with it ![]() new pistons installed. the ring compressor wouldn't work on these little pistons so i had to do it the PITA way ![]() just after i installed the rear main seal ![]() here come a few accessories! the new 3Tech econo cam and a +10 sprocket. hoping no one notices that i forgot the timing belt lol ![]() it's getting there ![]() idk...just thought i should be taking pics at this point. ![]() the original flywheel bolts had a few heads missing, so I had to order some from BelMetrics in Maine (these are not them; i had to have the flywheel installed to torque the crank sprocket/pulley bolt ![]() timing belt on, all timed and almost ready ![]() strap on ;P and ready to go in ![]() me dropping her in. my wife was originally helping to hold the other side, but she started taking pictures and forgot to include herself in them. ![]() a little more finesse and it went right in ![]() mount bolts ![]() and it's in!!! ![]() waiting on the new radiator, and #2 and #3 plug wires swapped accidentally. I didn't notice that until I tried to start it the next day ![]() i had to.... ![]() first 3.4 miles ! woot still going! ![]() me wondering why the temperature was pretty high according to my stock gauge. i've since installed an aftermarket temp and it is consistent around 195-200F so...it's good, but it was screwing with my mind during the break-in ride. ![]() my son laughing at me flooring and decelerating Mattro in 4th We had a good time and Mattro runs great! Now to see what kind of gas mileage I get after the rebuild. Matt... Edited by Michner, Jun 25 2012, 08:54 PM.
