Hesitation/ miss 96 3/5; no check engine light

First time I have ever had a problem since I bought it new in 96. Driving home today and it started hesitating ever so slight at about 45 mph. No check engine light. Closed loop all the time except when decelarating. I am getting ready to surf these threads for a while, but I figured I"d get one going here just in case... any ideas?

Hesitation like a miss or like it's running out of gas?

My first inclination would be to see if the PCV valve was clean, the wires were secure and see if the cone spray of the injector was a fine mist. Depending on the age of the plugs and distributor/rotor, it may be time for a tune-up.

Thanks. It's been about 20k miles since the last tune up, but I don't remember if I put anew new pcv in that time. I usually do cap , wires, plugs, and one other thing and last time it was a fuel filter. (I'd do more if it weren't for the budget) I'll pick up a pcv at lunch today and check out that injector too.

do not
"check out the injector"
unless you really know what that means

and you have a scope

hands off , fingers off -

lucky for most users
these injectors do not fail a little bit , either they are broke and do not function or they are "good" and do function

What if it leaks? That's failed but still working.

I have been commuting iin her for the last few days, and she has not been acting up (looking for some wood to knock on) just had the symtoms on that one trip. I guess these last few days of no problems shall be the "checking out the injector". Mwebb, it's always nice to see your rezponses as I read through these threads. If mwebb says it is a certain way, it most certainly is. I don't think I will touch the injector as long as I own the car.

My problems eventually came back and got worse. Started stalling out occasionally. I put a new gas cap on today and did not have any stalling. Anybody ever heard of one of these cars not running right due to bad gas cap?

Yes.

Is that a trick question?

In retrospect I'll ask if when you open the gas cap before was there pressure escaping? A hissing noise.

I have a big pressure relief when I opened the old cap and with the new cap. Stalling is back now again. Seems to be no problem in the morning, and lots of problems in the hot afternoon. Sometimes it stalls for so long now, that I start to pull over, but the it comes back from the dead and I get back to my commute. When it is not stalling, it runs like the day I drove it off the lot new.

Fuel injectors fail in this exact manner all the time.

Hissing is normal glweek.

Our cars are equipped with a 'evaporative emission system, it is designed to minimize the escape of fuel vapors into the atmosphere.' The vapors being vacuumed into the canister and back into the system.

for injectors you can look at
