Autozone's guage said the aft 02 sensor is the problem. It's the spliced kind and all the connections are good . Didn't drop it . I don't wanna just buy another one and do it again. Anybody got some ideas ?

So is the sensor really bad or is it just reading a bad converter?

if the post cat o2 sensor is bad, i can make you a good price on a brand new bosch 4 wire unit that plugs right into your harness.

i don't have any mk4/5 cars except the wife's grocery getter and i'll never need it.

First off dont trust Vatozone for diagnosis. Most of the proplems with cars i diagnosis is people using the "shotgun" method and replacing good oem parts with crappy aftermarket. What are the codes? When does the light come on? When does it turn off? Any drivability issues?

Converter's brand-new. Light is usually on . Last time it was off, it was for only 5 minutes and it was really raining then. I'll get the codes later today .

Maybe it doesn't like your new converter? :) Did it come on with the old one too, or was it just plugged?

:+1

Somewhat related. I was able to get my Cat. code to go away for a while by cleaning my distributor cap posts. Finally replaced the only O2 sensor on my '91 and the code did not come back.

Still didn't go back to Zone . Last time there , I didn't ask for the code numbers , but he said something was wrong with the heater circuit . Guess I wired it up wrong or ..... I dunno folks . The wiring info with the O2 sensor didn't actually have my color-coding scenario . There were 2 wires of the same color ( one set had 2 white wires and the other set had 2 BLACK wires), so I attached those together. The other wires had possible scenarios depicted in the paperwork that came w the sensor .

me and my metro says "On a 4 wire O2 there is a signal wire and an external ground, the other pair is heat and ground for that circuit. A one wire grounds through the manifold. "

mwebb says:
anyway
white wires are heater wires
one gets 12 volts positive or system voltage from Fuel pump relay / main injection relay
the other gets ground , 12 volts negative

I can't find a picture. Most O2 sensors come with some instruction, but I tossed mine. :smackface

My 1996 FSM shows:
1. WHT wire going to LT GRN/BLK to PCM pin C2-9 sensor ground (also to TPS, MAP, ECT, IAT and HO2 sensor 1)

2. BLU wire going to YEL to PCM pin C3-8 HO2S sensor 2 signal (sire is shielded and grounded to BLK/GRN wire/PCM C1-1)

3. BLK wire going to PNK to PCM pin C1-4 HO2S sensor 2 heater control

4. BLK wire going to BLK/WHT to JUNCTION BOX (and other locations.)

Thanks, but sorry Bad Bent, that's not clicking . I hear " using a volt-ohmmeter" and my brain gets mushy . What's that in dog years ?

Multimeter would be a mixed breed mutt. :lol

Well, if your two black and two white wires are messed up then maybe you can follow the 4 color codes I listed from my FSM on the P0135 code(?) and find our which wires are correct or incorrect. Then you would not need a multimeter. Your O2 sensor has 2 WHT and 2 BLK wires. So you wold check the two BLK wires and just imagine that your WHT wire is a BLU wire for checking the other connections. Electricity is magic anyway.

The other option... watch this video 42 times to learn.

BTW, I am watching truck driving tutorials on YouTube to prep me for my CDL-A driving test. :rocker

Thanks BB for vid n g'luck on the CDL . My O2 sensor has 2 white, 1 black and 1 gray wire(s) . 2 whites are connected to the 2 blacks , black wire to either white or blue , and gray wire to either white or blue ( I'll tell you what they are, just ran outa time today) .At the plug-in next to the firewall , 2 black wires become one red w black stripe and one black w white stripe , white wire becomes green w black stripe and blue wire becomes a yellow wire . Oh, that looks like what you already posted . OK, great, guess if the "white or blue" controversy checks out OK, I'll hafta buy another one and just assume it's crap . Thanks 'gain for your time.

The short solution is to go ahead and fork out the extra money for one advertised as "plug and play" and comes with a socket :smackface

"That's my plan and I'm sticking to it."

But wait and see if anyone has a better suggestion?
