Intermittent P0420 is usually a bad catalytic converter. As time goes on, it will be less and less intermittent.

I should have noted ... light isn't intermittent anymore . It's just on . Converter's good . WTF

Well, i bought another one , but that didn't fix it . I wired it up correctly according to the sheet w the new sensor .I got code #'s this time ... PO 134 and PO 171.

P0134 - HO2S 1 Circuit No Activity Detected - sounds to me like you need to be looking for a broken wire
P0171 - Fuel System Too Lean - likely a result of the above?

OK. Guess I'll be checking for continuity between the plug-in end and where I soldered . If there's still a problem, I gotta check in the other direction ( towards fuse box ) . ???? I'm checking now on this forum for a color-coded schematic . Anybody want to make it easy, like the commercial .

RFirst off I would never trust a 'universal' O2 sensor. That being said the FSM for my 99 says "Do not repair the wiring, connector or terminals. Replace the oxygen sensor if the pigtail wiring, connector, or terminal is damaged." It then goes on to say "...external clean air reference is obtained by way of theoxygen sensor signal and heater wires. Any attempt to repair the wires, connectors, or terminals could result in the obstruction of the air reference and degraded sensor performance." IMO the $20 savings isn't worth the possible headaches, and I take it you have done this twice now?

When I repaired my exhaust system I had to remove both O2 sensors, I noticed that there was some corrosion. I just scraped it clean as best I could with a little pick. This may be part of your problem.

you can not solder 02 sensor wires or connectors
do not use FRED's 02 sensors

use the original from GM or Suzuki
it is cheaper to do it right 1x
than it is to do it 3 times incorrectly

your cat will / may set a DTC after you get a functioning 02 sensor in the system

the front 02 sensor is one of the most important parts in your system - why on earth would you use a half fast part ?

Redde - yay,yay I know I shouldn't have got the cheapies, but what the 'ell. I did try cleaning old sensor, but that didn't work . Mwebb - why can't you solder O2 wires ? The front sensor is good, just the aft is bad . I know I know , shoulda bought the plug-in variety. Couldn't resist bein' a cheapskate .

Now I have some " checkin' for a short " to do which I don't want to do .

Now I have some " checkin' for a short " to do which I don't want to do .
Might want to just start cleaning grounds, most of which are frame-bolt connections. I use a Dremel Tool clone and it's small wire wheel. The DTC may/should go away on it's own but you can have the code removed from memory to see if it returns. I do it with my handy orange OBDII Code Reader I got on eBay for $30ish.

I checked the green & black wires for continuity. All OK . It's too hot & I don't want to be a fuckn mechanic every day . Anybody want to buy this piece of crap ?
