Hey All, First time Geo owner but a long time admirer. Long time car guy that started in aircooled VW's and moved onto watercooled VW's and now BMW's. Do my own maintenance, build my won cars, autocross, etc. I've recently been given a '99 Metro 3 cylinder 5 speed that has a bad first gear, not synchro since it will go in gear but jerks wildly if you try to move forward. Was running fine right up until it happened. Trying to find a transmision for it today. Later, Bruce

If it's a transmission you're after you can start your search here: http://car-part.com/ Sometimes you can also find them on Craigslist and occasionaly on the forum in the for sale section. If on the other hand you want to part with the problem - let me know, I'm in the market and not that far away... |

Welcome! I'll probably see you around. I live in Laurel, but I'm down your way all the time for work. Brandywine Auto Parts probably has a tranny for you up where 301 and Branch Avenue meet. Any transmission will bolt in, but there are four different ratios possible. You've got the worst one now, very high rpms. |

I called them and they said no go. Said me and everyone else are looking for one. They could have one for me in 4 days for $600 and a 101 day warranty. Our transmission has to be a 99-01 correct? I found a 93 down in Richmond. I also found several for $350 scattered around several PA junkyards. Which trans has the best final drive? Thanks for the reply, Bruce |

Depends on what you are after, max mileage? max power? somewhere in between? Here's how you can figure out what ratio a given trans is: http://geometroforum.com/topic/4187023/1/ The max mileage crowd searches out the 3:52 but many folks feel that doesn't leave enough behind to pull hills, the 3:79 is probably the better compromise between best mileage and some power, the 4:10 (I believe this is the most common) leans a bit more towards power, while the 4:39 is all about getting up to speed quicker. I believe any of the transmissions from 89-01 will bolt up including those from 4 cylinder cars, the 4 cylinder ones have to have the mount moved for the stabilizer bar but I believe the hole is already in place and it's just a matter of moving the stud over. I am currently running a 91 trans in a 96 hatchback. Good Luck! Edited by idmetro, Jun 26 2012, 09:38 AM.

Thanks guys. I've decided to grab the junkyard transmission on Saturday. This car is so cheap yet complete, that I'm considering using this as my $2012 Grassroots Motorsports Challenge car this year. My Karmann Ghia is mostly a shell and home projects take precedent over getting it done. Metro won't be competitive but I'll make the event which is the best part of it anyway. Will let you guys know what I find. Bruce |
