I called him last week and he said he didn't have anything for a '99. I found him on Craigslist. I went back and checked the ad and the ad was devoid of 95-01. |

Works for me... Just to be clear the 94 and earlier trans will bolt up and run? I suspect gearing differences, bracket locations, etc? All of which are irrelevant if I can avoid one extra transmission removal. Should I decide to invest with "sweat equity" and grab the cheap trans from the junkyard should I pull the clutch and flywheel from a 4 cylinder car? It looks that way based on what I've read so far. Thanks! Edited by VWguyBruce, Jun 29 2012, 08:16 AM.

Yep, it'll bolt up and run with no issues. Most likely it's even the same ratio (not guaranteed of course) since a large percentage of the cars came with 4:10's |

Man you guys are fast here on this forum!!! I was editing my post to add another question and there were two more responses. What a resource you guys are! Some of my questions on other forums go completely unanswered or answered poorly to boost members post count. Should I decide to invest with "sweat equity" and grab the cheap trans from the junkyard should I pull the clutch and flywheel from a 4 cylinder car? It looks that way based on what I've read so far. Thanks a million you guys. |

honestly id go get the ana trans, and order a 1.3 clutch and flywheel from napa. Total cost about $425.00 I vaguely remember the guy being confused on what will fit what for the metros. He prob has the old timing belt chart that says the g10 is an interference motor too.

1.3 flywheel and clutch is a "must have" for me. My hatch has the 1.3 stuff and my vert the stock 1.0. Night and day difference in clutch feel. Probably a little difference in acceleration but it is much more about the positive feel of the clutch. |

Picked up transmission from ANA today, $250 and it's pretty clean, less than 50k miles. There were two automatics and another 5spd on the same pallet. Asked if i needed a starter too. Interesting place, several hundred JDM motors and transmissions, JDM front clips from a couple Celicas. Reasonable prices. I asked about Skyline GTR drivetrain and he said he just sold it. He does have an RB25 engine, trans, harness and ECU for $2500 which is very reasonable. Hope to get the good trans in tomorrow. Will let you guys know how it works out. Also wanted to mention that there's a small used car dealership here in town that has a '97 3/5 that needs a home for $700. Decent car that ran when traded in. Didn't start when I stopped by to look but it's been sitting for at least 6 months. Ill be glad to get more info if anyone needs it. |

The car is now at the house. Starts and drives quite well for a free car. My son and I drove around the neighborhood launching out of second gear without issue. I actually thought I stalled it when I was making a u-turn but it's so quiet at idle I couldn't hear it I think my 10 year old is sold on the cheap/free car thing after we brought this one home, hahaha. Transmission work will commence on Monday after my weekend shift. I'm looslely going to attempt an autocross next Saturday if I can manage to get it all together. I decided to upgrade to the 1.3L clutch and flywheel while I was in there. RockAuto.com had a RHINOPAC/WORLD CAR branded kit for $83.79 for the 1.3L and a rear main seal for $2.40. Additionally, RockAuto has a 5% discount code that's good until 8/15/12... code is 8DC7D212FF36. With shipping the total was only $97.22. I know some of you may baulk at the bargain basement brand I selected but I chose the cheapest part available. With the larger flywheel and the low power output of the 1 liter motor I seriously doubt I will have any issues with the cheap parts. I was able to find a local junkyard that has a Suzuki Swift flywheel on the shelf for $40, that kind of money is chump change while we're at 110 degree heat indices. That's under $150 for an new/uprated clutch and flywheel. Good stuff. Speaking of heat, my buddy that gave the car to me said the AC isn't necessarily bad but the condition is unknown. He said the belt was off when he bought it and he never cared to look at it. I'll be putting a belt on to see how the AC system responds. Fingers crossed that it may actually work or only need a charge. I also picked up the factory service manuals on ebay for $30 shipped. I love factory service manuals. Bentley Publishers has spoiled me over the years. Apologies to the rust belt commando's but this car is ridiculously clean underneath. Snapped one picture while it was on the trailer. ![]() Later, Bruce Edited by VWguyBruce, Jul 7 2012, 11:28 AM.

It is a quiet engine eh! Sounds like good training for your son, both in mechanics and economics. And pics of the autocross, please. |
