Thanks again Geo Glenn and Shinrin. yes, there is some kind of oil leak around the heads it seems. Pep boys said something about fixing the cv axle. It is going to be the second car and used as little as possible as soon as I get a passenger side door mirror for the 1997 Nissan Altima.

This heat here is so hot right now I'm tempted to just be lazy and work with the oil pan when it gets cooler or when we get money for a rebuilt engine....whichever comes first.

I just want to fix whatever I need to fix so that when the rebuilt engine is put in it will not be affected by something else that is older. Rome wasn't won in a day. Sure will be happy when mid October comes...that is when the weather breaks here and then we have a wonderful 7 months with no winter to speak of.

We are all just trying to make it until mid October.

Well, thanks again and Happy Summer to you all,

Beth the beginner.....

Thanks so much for your help. I have been a nurse, so I am used to diagnosing and assessing and trying to fix people....this is just a car...with gasoline instead of blood. Nice thing...cars don't talk back and you don't have to worry about putting them in pain :).
You don't have to work on your car while it's running, that helps a bit.
That's why I went into electronics. As a doctor, you can't walk away from a patient on the operating table to think about the problem for awhile.

They sure as hell go into the other room and look things up on the Internet. Not on the operating table, but when you're in their office or the Emergency Room they do.

With only a 3 speed, highway speed must be kept at 55-60 or MPG's drop big time.
Its no fun tho :(

Well, it took a while, but, Beth the Beginner got what she needed. Husband Phil has been driving 65 miles one way to work on a 2 1/2 cylinder G10 engine for the last couple of months. Last Friday may have been the last time the engine was going to run well under power for the drive.

Beth and Phil were eager to learn everything possible. My brain felt like an all you can eat buffet at an overeater's anonymous convention - picked clean. :deal They took turns helping with the engine installation while trying to keep 6 kids organized and entertained.

It took me a minute to recognize this as a 1991 LSI. Automatic transmission. Rust free = Dusty in Arizona.

This is what Beth and Phil needed. It's not a full meal deal overhaul. I tossed in a whole bunch of extra stuff that was laying around the garage just to make the installation complete.

This engine was completely disassembled with the exception of removing the pistons from the cylinders. The cylinder bores were fine. It got a new oversized set of main and rod bearings, a new head gasket, and new camshaft and crankshaft seals. The head had a recent valve job, but the #1 and #3 intake valves and the #2 exhaust valve were leaking. The valves got cleaned, the valve guides reamed to spec, and lapped back into the seats. The #1 and #3 intake valves found their way into the recycle bucket, and a pair of new Osvat intake valves took their places. The oil pan flange was damaged from previous installation of a Fel-Pro oil pan gasket. The oil pan was replaced with one that was not damaged.

Here's Beth the next morning. The engine is installed and ready for Phil to go to work . . . :drivin
