Starting tearing the car down today and it struck me that the transmission I got from ANA in Baltimore appears to be a completely different animal. Lots of differences. I didn't notice since I bought it before I had the car at the house. What do you guys think I ended up with?!?![]()

It doesn't look like any 5 speed I have seen in a metro. The motor mounts look different. You might be able to use the numbers on the tranmission to check what vehicle it came out of. |

Maybe a Prizm or some other "geo" branded car? EDIT: The prizm looks to have a hydraulic clutch. So not that one. Regardless, you can't use that one. Return it. Edited by Coche Blanco, Jul 9 2012, 02:42 PM.

That looks like some kind of suzuki trans, the top of the bell housing and the 3 bolts that hold the detent ball and springs in look suzuki to me. However doesn't look like a metro trans though. |

It's pretty close. Bell housing would work. Guy said he had another when I picked it up. Someone has just been in here as every bolt was loose and there's a new Exedy clutch inside. At least I got it apart today. All the boots are torn on the drivers side. Balljoint, CV and tie rod. Such is life with a free car. ![]() Got to use my new cordless impact today. Worked great. Much quieter without the compressor running. ![]() New gear wrenches from Christmas. ![]() Manual came while I was working on the car.

That looks like a Sprint tranny to me. Mk1 to all of you. You need a tranny with a black steel cover on the end. The aluminum part with the dip stick is steel on a Metro tranny. |

So an early trans hmmm. I spoke to the guy this morning and he was sure it was for a Metro. I told him to look for the stamped steel cover. We'll see if I have to go looking for a transmission again. |

I picked up my 4 cylinder flywheel yesterday. I decided to weigh all of my parts while I'm waiting for my transmission to be pulled from the parts car. Stock1.0L flywheel = 13.8 lbs Stock flywheel with Exedy PP and disc = 20.2 lbs Stock 1.3L flywheel = 11 lbs Stock 1.3L flywheel with Rhino Pac PP and disc = 19.6 lbs Might be the budget PP/disc I chose is particularly heavy. Still 1 less pound rotating off the end of the crank several thousand times per minute is a significant savings when combined with the improved pedal feel. These are the results of my parts YMMV. |

Rear main seal, flywheel and clutch go on without a hitch. I go to throw the transmission on and input shaft won't slide in. This is the same situation someone else recently posted. The first few times it looked like the shaft was going in about a half inch or so. I thought disc isn't aligned so I rechecked it with the tool and it had the slightest bind. So I realigned disc again. No joy. 7 times I tried lifting this trans into the car with the same result. The alignment tool that came in this kit is all kind of loose, slightly bent and it doesn't really seem to center the disc. I tried holding it as level as possible but it's off center by a hair each time I try. Input shaft in trans is straight, old disc slides on easily. This sucks. This is unbelievable. I know I'm a little rusty with this kind of thing but it's only nuts and bolts. Why are the simplest jobs so difficult sometimes?!? Am I missing something?!? |

Look at the splines on the clutch plate and the input shaft. Do you see any burrs? You might need to take a small file to the splines of each to clean them up. Try sliding the clutch plate on and off the spline several times to make sure there is no binding or burrs or nonsense that will cause you problems while you are lifting the transmission up in the car. Once it is all happy, then you can install the clutch back on the flywheel and slide the trans back on and bolt it up. Let me know if that helps. |

Thanks for the tip. I'll try that in the next couple days. Man, with the heat yesterday and the strength I depleted on the 6th and 7th attempt I need to gain some strength back. Are these things THAT finicky with disc alignment?!? I mean, I've done a multitude of other clutches on cars with much finer splines. These are pretty coarse. Should I call Rock Auto and ask for another tool? I wish I had an input shaft or the factory tool to know for sure. |

As Me and my Metro pointed out. That is a Sprint unit. MV2. You need an MV3. The MV 2 has even smaller syncs in 1/2 than our beloved Metros trans. |

Mine was. Mine fought me pretty hard until I got to looking at the splines. A little grease on the splines doesn't hurt either. Having a buddy on the other end with a big ol' ratchet manually spinning the engine around to help facilitate in the spline engagement is pretty handy too. By the way, did you change the pilot bearing? That's one of things that is mandatory whenever you drop the transmission, in my opinion. |

Yes, swapped the bearing. I will be using a second person next time I go at it. Do you guys let the tool just sit in the bearing and hang or do you support it by hand?? Rock Auto did get back to me on the alignment tool. They wanted more info so I'll see what they say. |

I'm glad someone realizes that the G13/G10 "upgrade" has very little difference in weight. |
