Just possibly confirming what I suspect.....The Facts: '93 3sp 2door, second owner and my mother was the first, ( I sold it to her brand new, and actually had to go get the car at another dealership. So I was the first to drive the car. ), daily driver for the last 4 yrs, 70k miles, started I think with exhaust pipe rusting out in the middle of the car causing exhaust leak, then started light smoke upon first start up daily, using 2 qts every couple weeks, then started losing power at higher loads, ie I drive the freeway a lot, and when I hit a headwind or uphill it started bogging out, finally stranded me on freeway, wouldn't stay running, towed home, ran compression tests, 1&2 were dead. Tore down to head, sure enough burnt exhaust valves, took to my machine shop and had him changed out all three exhaust valves, reinstalled, all new ignition parts, etc., double checked timing, runs good but still has light backfire in deceleration, and a hesitation at midrange load while driving, no power on top end at all, barely get to 60mphs on freeway, and still has light smoke upon start up. Bad rings or exhaust leaks driven? Or both? |

You have it already figured out....bad rings. They can be changed with the engine in the car....by dropping the oil pan. After that, if you still have the backfire, drop the exhaust to test it. Yes, it will be loud for testing....maybe find a back road? Let us know. |

How old is the timing belt? |

Sometimes just doing a valve job isn't enough. Clean or replace the valve lifters, and make sure the oil pressure relief valve in the oil pump isn't all gummed up. It's just as easy with the head off to clean pistons, hone the bores and install new rings. With that low mileage, if the rod bearings look good, they probably are. Aftermarket rod bearings tend to be inadequate for providing proper clearance. |

Recheck timing marks for alignment on cam and crank gears as well as spark plug wire routing from distributor, to make sure they are correct for the backfire and loss of power. Give the smoke a little time to see if it gets better. Not sure how long you been driving it since you fixed it but it could be oil in the exhaust or converter that will clear up given a little time. Run it and see how much oil consumption is now. If you have not done it, replace the pcv valve with a new one and check the egr valve and passages for blockages. Also is the check engine light on? |

Wow! This forum does really work! Awesome! Thanks so much for the reply's! Update! Smoke is dissipating : now only when I gas it, running is better :found disconnected vacuum line that attaches to the throttle body , still hesitation upon acceleration over 3k RPM, and backburp upon decel. Running through the rest of the gas in it, sitting for the last couple months, will change EGR and PCV, but I really doubt that is the issue, looking at replacing exhaust system front to back, then will hit the freeway and find out! No Check engine light On. I would hate to think that I was that close to the Rings and they are bad and needed replaced and I didn't do it. Course, been there, done that! |

Probably no need to change the EGR unless it is leaking but do clean the passages to and from it if they are clogged and change the gasket.

Update, most smoke is gone, other then what is burning off the transaxle from the Dist O ring leak, Thanks again Geometroforum.com!, picked up the O ring today, ruling out the rings, picked up the right PCV valve tonight will change out but I'm still getting a lot of hesitation during acceleration unless I gas if through that RPM range, top end has come back, got to 70 on freeway pretty easily, oil usage hard to tell with the O ring leak, seems my exhaust patch job has subdued the leaks, but still minor back burp on decel, hesitation has me concerned, need to take it on a 50 mile one way road trip this week /Twice, just hoping it won't strand me on the freeway again..... |

Update, did a few 100 mile trips, burns about a Qt per 100 miles. Guess I need to rebuild the bottom ( rings ) right? Not leaking any oil that I can see under the car. Do see light oil smoke when driving. Getting around the expected 50 MPG, so everything else seems to be running as usual. Easier to do it in the car or pull it out and bring it in to the garage? Plus, just get the re-ring kit from autozone or is there a better place? |
