Hey guys and gals, My '95, 3 cylinder Geo has always been a big oil burner. It's has just recently gotten a lot worse however and I believe my MPG has dropped consequently. I'm looking for a website with some diagnostic and fix-it-yourself videos. Please and thank-you!! |

Well I drove just under 400 kilometers the other day and went from 3/4 oil to the fill line. There is oil all over the engine and the under side of the hood. It was even dripping off the front end of the hood onto the bumper. This trip used to cost me about $20 in gas. This time it was about $30. Please help

Dang! That's quite a leak! With a leak that size, I would think you should be able to see it by opening the hood, looking around, and giving it a couple revs. If it's spraying the hood, and dripping onto the bumper, I'd take a close look at the oil sending unit. That can be a nice little oil squirt gun when they fail. It's right next to the oil filter.Cam & crank seals can be suspect too. You may have to resort to degreasing the engine bay. might make it easier to identify the source.

Okay, I'll start with degreasing it then trying to pin point the source |

Several places to check, Make sure the oil cap is not cracked or broken (I forgot to put my oil cap back on at a gas station. Within a few miles, the engine sprayed oil all over the bottom of the hood) Check the PCV valve connection, make sure the rubber tube is not cracked or split. Look at the bottom of the dipstick tube (there's an O-ring that goes at the bottom of the tube) The top of the dipstick tube should fit tight. |

My engine sprayed oil like that also when the PCV and "Y" tube clogged blowing out the cam seal. An easy fix in my case as the cam seal could be pushed back in place and it sealed. Now I'd spread a thin layer of RTV around the outer edge and push it back in place. To replace you'll need to remove the timing belt and cam gear. PCV valve location.

Thanks for the warm welcome! So I think I've isolated the leak. I believe the seal around the oil pan is blown and is leaking oil which is being picked up by the timing belt and flung onto the hood where it then drips down over the whole engine. I will replace the seal and see if that does it! Thanks everybody, I'll let you all know how it goes. |

Cam and crank seals are the most likely area for a leak of that magnitude. |

^^^ ...what Woodie said. They could make you think it was the oil pan , but it was up above.
