Rear brake locked up; Need some advice

Hi guys. I brought a Metro home from the junkyard today. It's a 99, 4/5. My thinking is, if I can't get it to run, I'll swap the manual tranny over to the Deerslayer. More on that later. I'll eventually start a project page, but right now I just need to get it into the garage. :smackface

The rear brake on the passenger side is locked up. The brake line has been disconnected, so only the parking brake is still connected. The driver's side is free, so it's not the entire system. Obviously the drum doesn't want to just slide off. :shake

If I could somehow get the drum off, I'd just take the shoes off until I verified whether it is going to be a runner or a donor car. Will a slide hammer get the drum off, or is there some way to retract the shoes??? :dunno

Help! :oshit

You can remove the bearing nut and leave the wheel on and try banging it off with a hammer, or rent/borrow a slide hammer.

Slidehammer.

If it's a rust free car, it's worth the time to get it back into operation.

Far be it from me to question someone much more knowledgeable than me ( :mullet ), but wouldn't taking off the bearing nut allow the entire hub to slide off? I know I can remove the brake drum on my 97 without taking the nut off.

Refer to the Factory Service Manual for your year of Geo Metro, if all else fails.

I would first make sure there is slack in the emergency brake cable to that side. then I would look at a pic of another wheel assembly showing the location of the pivot point of the e brake lever. next I would compare the back of the backing plate to find the pivot point. and then start tapping the back of the backing plate at that point to see if enough rust would come loose that the old spring will open the ebrake lever, while trying to move the wheel to see if its working.

If that does not work then I would FORCE THE DAMN THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some have separate hub. Some have hub integral with drum. If you have separate hubs the drum should have threaded holes that allow you to use a jacking bolt to remove a stuck drum.

Yeah, it does have the holes, but I didn't have any bolts. I tried the ones from my 97, but they were too small. I wouldn't have thought something like that would have changed, but I guess that shows what I know!

Got it!!! :D I'm working nights, so I popped the rubber plugs out the back of the hub and hosed down the inside with PB Blaster before I left for work yesterday. While I was at work, I grabbed a couple different sizes of metric bolts to make sure I had the right ones. When I got back this morning, I stuck the bolts in and the drum backed right off! :banana

We're heading to the lake this weekend, so I doubt if I'll do much work on it for another week or so, but I'll keep everyone posted when I start. :type

As always, thanks for the great advice, guys. I'm sure I'll need more. :thumb
