So just got this car yesterday and it was filthy inside and out and the engine area was gunked everywhere so today I made a stab at cleaning the inside out and then de-greased the engine bay and sprayed it all off gently with hose. I cranked her up to help evaporate some of the remaining water and sounded fine. Idled for about 10 minutes and then shut her off. 30 minutes later I get in to drive it up the street and starts off driving fine but still in first gear it would accelerate great and then all of a sudden it's like there is no power and then it starts shaking of course because my foot keeps bumpin the gas pedal each time it kicks. So why would I lose acceleration after washing it? Did I get something wet that I shouldn't have? lol, Scratching my head here. It drove great yesterday and even on the interstate, idle is great, had a lot of power, clutch shifts great. Electrical problems perhaps? Maybe I got some wires/circuit wet in engine bay area? Dunno, just thought I'd see what you guys thought. Day 2 and already having fun with it! |

Hey thanks for the tip. Yeah there was a good amount of moisture, I dried it all up with paper towels. Drove it some more and started doing it again but then seemed to stop. Hopefully it just needs time to dry out. Not to self: Don't wash engine area again. lol... |

i did the same thing. it was a good time. i was told by others to keep my car idling. so i did, that helped. i was using a presure washer though... i decided to take off and it would start sputtering, so i took it up and down the block and tried to keep it at a higher rpm so heat up the motor to get all the water out. |

Yeah today I got her road legal and took her out for a spin. Was going to go to car wash and vacuum but quickly realized it was still acting weird. Here's what's happening: Car starts right up no problem, idle is normal, sounds good. When I accelerate say in first gear it is fine but when at higher rpm the engine pretty much loses power and can't accelerate anymore. This occurs each time at higher rpm in each gear. Seems worse in low gears but still does it in higher gears. ? I'm not particularly car tech savvy so I don't know what's going on. Drove great when I got it and shifted out high each gear but once I washed engine seems like that's when problem started. Any ideas? I checked spark plugs and wire set for moisture and found some originally but checked today and didn't see any. Washed car july 18 Thanks! |

how long did it take for the car to "dry out" after you washed it? |

You have moisture in the distributor cap. remove the distributor cap and wipe it out. Spray a light film of WD 40nin the cap and install and then spray a light film over the outside of the cap. Moisture is bad for spark. |

Hey guys, figured it out finally lol. Thanks for all of the help I really appreciate it. Cars running great now. So I was checking spark plugs/wires and pull cylinder 3 wire off and the metal connector inside ripped off and was stuck on the spark plug still lol. So went to o'reilys and got a new spark plug wire set for 20 bucks and installed them (after I mixed up the wires and had to look up the proper diagram lol.. doh.) and started right up and accelerates great now. Also probably helped that I blew out the distributor so if there was any moisture in there it's mostly gone. Went on a cruise with a friend, stopped got some wings and a monte cristo (indigestion!), left and drove out towards country, at this point it is getting dark outside. I didn't think about my lights working since when I checked them during the day hazards worked fine. Get pulled over (cops are already hot on my trail and I haven't owned the car for a whole week yet!) and po informs me my back lights aren't even on. lol... so now I have a juicy wiring mess on my hands. Hope it's a simple fix, with your help it will be a cinch. Dash lights also don't work at night and also no dome light. May have something to do with the stereo being ripped out of the car (before I got it.) Onto the next adventure! |

Okay I will be sure to do this still. There may be some moisture still in there. What does the wd-40 do? |

Oh, so maybe just a bad fuse perhaps? I would love it if all it was was a fuse haha. Will try to fix over the weekend. Along with a few other things. Got some rubbing compound "scratch remover" polish today (maybe I can make the paint look a little better til I can paint it. If not, just 3 bucks.) and also some fuel system cleaner. Replacing spark plugs very soon and getting oil changed. New car stuff :] |

i drove it for about 5 mins or so and soon as i could get it to go beyond an idle, i tried to hold it at a higher rev to heat it up a bit more in there. |
