Hello everyone in Metro Freak land. This is my third time introducing myself - I don't know where the other intros are but, it's all good. been lurking on the forum for about a month checking out the great info from all the talented people on this site. It picked up a 97 Metro for $500. 00 :rocker and it's going to be my project to get it back into top form. I runs but only while it's not required to go faster than 15 mph :smackface . I did a compression test today after getting a gauge from harbor freight (the one I borrowed from O'reilly's didn't register any compression at all. my dry numbers cyl #1- 96, #2 94, #3 110, #4 115. With this info what's my next step :hmm. Do I start ripping it apart and replacing valves, rings and/or heads? Really appreciate any pointers I can get.

next step is to open a thread under engine tech and post your compression numbers and ask for next step

Welcome - Sounds to me like there may be other issues besides just a worn engine. If the vehicle is running i would think you could exceed 15mph. I'd start with the basic tuneup - cap, rotor, plugs, fuel filter and see what you get. Those will be parts you will want anyway so no effort/funds will be lost.

I'm not sure what the factory minimum is for compression on the 1.3 but I'm pretty certain you are well below the threshold. Very likely it's time to start the teardown with a complete rebuild in mind (my personal rule of thumb is if the car has greater than 100K miles on it I will do a full rebuild). Likely you will be able to hone the cylinders, re-ring, inspect bearing clearance (using plastigauge) and potentially re-using the bearing if they are within spec.

Others will chime in shortly.

You actually put one of your intro's under someone else's intro (here, which I replied to, -> http://geometroforum.com/topic/4868214/1/ (Post #5 & 7) and here -> http://geometroforum.com/topic/4860576/1 (Post #16, with a few replies below)), but welcome again :)

Thanks Bad Bent and Bogs - Is there a big difference between the 96 and 97 FSM? I got one for a 97 when i thought that i had an agreement with the seller. Ultimately, bought 96 instead after 97 owner backed out.

Welcome. What I can see of your car looks really nice. Much cleaner than any that I've gotten my hands on. How much did it set you back?

Welcome to the GMF forum :) In case your question hasn't been answered elsewhere, there is no significant difference between the 96 and 97 Factory Shop Manuals, or the cars either. I use a 96 FSM for my 97 with no problems.
