I have a code 15 - ECT Sensor Circuit and was wondering what the common causes and solutions were. There is also a code 14 for the same thing so what does 15 mean? Is the sensor bad or should I look at the wiring? Also, this is on a new to me 1994 1.0L. If this had been run like this for an extended time by the prior owner(s), what other issues should I watch out for? The engine seems to run very strong and solid and is going to be part of a swap I plan to do. Thanks, Conor |

One code means it is -40° and the other means it is 400°. One means the circuit is open (sensor unplugged or broken wire), the other means that the circuit is shorted to ground (sensor shorted or wire rubbing against a ground). If you unplug the sensor and measure the resistance across its two terminals, you can compare that reading to a chart which has been posted here in the past, but I can't tell you where it is. It looks like my sensor was bad. I completed the engine swap and other repairs required to get the car on the road a few days ago and had a check engine light the first day I drove the car. It was code 15 again so I figured the only thing common to that engine was the ECT which was left in place. The harnesses were not swapped since it was the same year and all so I figured the harness was ok. The sensor must have been shorted to ground. I swapped the sensor from the bad engine to the car and no more problems... Another question... Is this a sensor that wears out and loses effectiveness over time or does it usually work fine until it stops working? I was wondering because the sensor I am using may have 170k miles on it and was wondering if I should buy a new one. Thanks, Conor |
