So I picked up a 1997 Geo Metro hatchback tonight with 212km on the clock for $1k. It has a leaky rear brake line and a dead battery but otherwise she seems to be in pretty mint shape. It's a 3cyl 5spd with no AC or cruise and no power anything. Very basic and I like it I picked it up to save money on gas (duh!).It's my first Metro and I usually tend to side with the TDI crowd but this is a cheap and simple solution to my problem - $$$. I am swapping a TDI motor into an Audi S6 and this is my work car in the interim. I can't afford to pay for gas on a normal S6 (what I am currently driving) so in the end I'll have the Metro and a TDI S6. I've got a decent background with Audis and VWs; I've helped my old man build his (currently being rebuilt) 600hp S6 and worked on several other Audis and VWs. So tomorrow or the next day I'm going to check the compression, plugs, oil, filters, etc. and fix the brake line. I have a few pretty basic questions that I'm sure will be answered just browsing here, but I'll list them anyway: - best/easiest/cheapest mod for MPG? and what sort of mileage should I expect out of the 97 with no accessories? - did the hatchbacks come with a rear shelf (between the back seat and the hatch)? - are there any other common areas I should check before starting to really drive the car? It seems a lot of them that I found online had a rust problem near the front on the frame - where is this? Anyway, just wanted to say hello and I'll be hanging around quite a bit! Matt |

40 to 45 mpg, depends heavily upon engine condition and how you drive it. Put 40 psi in the tires. When you need new tires, get taller ones.
VERY RARE option
If you look at the frame of the car, by looking between the back of the front tire and the fender near the door, you'll see a structure leading forward from the firewall/door hinge area that has a loop in it where the tie rod goes through the loop. That whole structure rusts out. Unfortunately, the front/bottom area of this structure is where the control arms mount, so it's rather critical. You can see the inside of the same structure under the hood, look directly below the master cylinder/wiper motor. Edited by Woodie, Jul 24 2012, 05:51 AM.

Don't forget that in Canada we get much better mileage than that. Our cars go much farther on a gallon than the ones that were sent to the U.S.
I don't think it was as rare here in Canada. I have seen quite a few at the wreckers. BTW: Welcome

thanks for the info guys! Clark why do the Canadian cars get better mileage? It's also funny that the shelf was an option... I just figured it was missing. Since posting last night I did some reading and found out about the frame, I'll have a look tonight and post some pictures. |

Welcome to your new forum, chaloux! Nice bunch of TDI lovers on TDIlovers.com and looks like the engine swap went (is going) well. We would like some pictures however. "best/easiest/cheapest mod for MPG?" Usually slowing down is suggested. I do better when I obey the shift light at around 3,200 rpm with a little hypermiling. A good site for lower mpg is http://ecomodder.com. And "econo" cam and cam gear from 3Tech will cost about $200. http://geometroforum.com/pages/3Tech And a vacuum gauge or MPGuino helps a lot. You can do a grill block and air dam on the front bumper with some plastic. http://geometroforum.com/topic/3982844/1/, http://geometroforum.com/topic/4719611/1/ |
