The idler pulley is well known for making noise. It would be a shame to replace the compressor to find out it was just the idler pulley bearing.

In my experience 134a A/C is never great, but it's a lot better when the car is moving than it is when standing still.

Remove the AC belt, spin the pulley on the compressor by hand, if it sounds gravelly or produces a roaring sound, you have a bad clutch bearing.

The clutch bearing is $42.00 at Rock Auto

What do you mean added a charge? If you put a can of refridgerant in it and you dont know what was in it then take it somewhere and have a new dryer put on and the condensor fins cleaned and the fan verified it is working and have it vaccumed and recharged to the proper specs. If indeed the compressor is making a noise, it will likely fail. Perform the step of replacing that first then do the earlier steps.
