what's the rule on reusing head gaskets?

I'm still midway through my first engine rebuild. First try - still leaks oil. Disassembled, re-ringed pistons, and about to reassemble but I'm wondering if it's okay to re-use the cylinder head gasket. It's a new gasket from when I started this rebuild but the cylinder head was torqued down and sat for a few months. Is this one of those things that "it depends how it looks" or is it a replace every time component?

Theres been more than one that has been reused. It really would depend on how much of a risk taker you are and if you mind doing the job again if it blows. If you definately do not want to go back in, put on a new gasket. If you reuse it, I would spray it with copper spray first.

Personally it's worth the cost of a gasket to me to not to have to do it again. I'd rather not take the risk as I feel the odds are against me in that situation...

It would seems that the "no"s have it. New gasket it is then. I've also seen the thread about the small oil return holes in some gaskets (as mine also had). Any recommendation on brands to get the correct sized holes?

Don't worry about them, they're right. We need to take down that little bit of mis-info from the site.

Never for me, there are plenty of gaskets im ok with using again if in good shape but the head gasket is the last one id risk. If your oil pan gasket leaks and a little oil gets on the driveway then it sucks, if the headgasket leaks and water gets into the oil and takes out your bearings that will ruin your weekend.
