Couple things to check

1. Grounding, check all the grounding points (not exactly sure if there is one on the mk5s but there might be one on the back or side of the intake manifold)
2. Check timing

Main sensor ground is on the camshaft position sensor housing. On the driver's side end of the valve cover, closest point toward the battery.

Uh, no, that's the exact opposite spot from where I described. That's for power steering. The other end of the engine, closest to the battery. It's two or three wires, either black or green, that all hook up to a round eyelet, then get bolted to the metal of the engine. Unbolt, clean, rebolt.
