270,000 miles. 15,000 miles ago I honed it, installed new rings, and threw a fresh head on it. Just recently, after it idles down to 1,000 RPMs or so, and when I rev it back up it smokes. It goes away once I get over that engine speed. What gives? I understand that I need to go oversize on the pistons and do it, "the right way" but I just don't get why it would smoke at those exact parameters.

What color is smoke? If its grey, sounds like you may be fouling your plugs when it idles down and your just blowing excess fuel out when you rev it back up. When was the last time you did a tune-up? If its blue, your rings are toast.

Who rebuilt the head? Did it have new valve seals installed? |

Some guy from eBay. I have never really trusted that it was rebuilt the right way, so that might be the problem. |

I'll have to see what color it is in the daytime, it was too dark last night to really tell. |

Wild theory Leaking fuel injector. At low rpms(idle) the fuel drip exceeds handleable amounts, building up in the tbi. You open the throttle a little, the fuel dumps into the engine and comes out as unburnt smoke. You give it more throttle, the amount of air it takes equalizes the extra fuel and it burns. |

I can't really tell what color it is, and it seems to only do it after idling a bunch. i.e. redlights and drive thrus. I'll see if I can make a lot of the smoke to see if its color. |

find a long hill. going down the hill let up on the gas all the way down. at the bottom of the hill down shift and hit the gas hard. if it is bad valve seals you will get a cloud of smoke when you hit the gas. |

I remember you saying this a while back, and I did it today, no smoke. So valve seals should be out of the question. |

For whatever it's worth, it smoked one time today, at initial startup. But of the other 40 times I started it, nothing. |

very small water leak to the combustion chamber?? Only shows up after it sits for a while?----------have you noticed a small drop in your coolant level over time? |

I'm sticking with my injector guess that's based on my wild guessing When you shut it off for the night, the injector leaks all the leftover fuel out over time, so when you first start it coughs up that extra gas. |

Very well could be that. I'll have to take note of my water level more often. My distributor cap had some buildup in ne spark plug terminal. That may cause a misfire/plug fouling. |
