I wanted to thank Johnny Mullet, Bad Bent, Starscream5000, Geo Glen and WAY too many others who contribute to this forum's community. You ALL have given me the courage to pull the head and pistons from my wife's `91 3-cylinder Metro convertable. I only had 125, 125, 75 dry compression and the car would no longer idle at stop lights without dieing. It's a automatic and we've already had the local tranny shop overhaul the transmission to the tune of almost 1,800.00 so I'm going the rest of the way to fix this girl up. I'm a computer nerd by trade and I haven't pulled or dropped in an engine in over 20 years. If it weren't for my mad skills with Google, I would have never found the wealth of knowlage you all put out every day. I have gotten this far with '0' issues! NONE! Not one busted head bolt or bloody knuckle. The head is off and pistons are pulled. I plan to ship the top end and pistons to Geo Jeff for a rebuild and new rings and I'll hone the cylinders and put everything back together. I won't be pulling the block to save myself some trouble getting it mated back to the tranny. Thanks to you all, I've kept my pistons numbered and with the original bearings and I've kept my oil check valve from getting lost. I'll be careful to be sure my head gaskets have the oil drain ports and that they're the right size. I don't have a crank position sensor so I guess I'll use a gasket on my pan and there is also no EGR on a `91 but I have cleaned out the carbon filled port going into my exhaust. I'll put a new timing belt and replace any seals that I can. To be honest with you all, I hate this car since the black soft top is SO hot here in the summer and so cold not to mention road noise. There is no A/C but I like that. It's simple under the hood and that makes it all worth while. I'm going to try to post an album on my photos. https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=853B2A6A0E675D82!1630&authkey=!AMSxmSojYeupWyA I'll see you in the forums, Roy Edited by RoyTheGoy, Jul 27 2012, 12:19 AM.

welcome- and ditch the oil pan gasket and use red RTV. Glad that you've learned from us. ![]() Let that little lady (your car) run topless and feel the caress of wind in your hair and sun on your face. Looking forward to seeing your album. |

Welcome aboard! You do realize that some blood sacrifice is required for the project to be completely successful right? I recommend a skinned knuckle or two somewhere in the re-assembly process - Geos are frugal so it won't take much but it's that final step to insure a good running engine with a long life. Good Luck! |

It's actually the combination of the two: Skill + Blood sacrifice = Successful completion of mechanical project If you think about it I bet there aren't many occasions where you successfully completed work on your car without losing at least a little blood in the process... Welcome, RoyTheGoy! When I changed spark plugs on my dad's 1956 Ford F100 pick-up and scraped my knuckles he said 'Now your a mechanic.' And yeah use the RTV unless you feel adventurous(?), I have an oil pan gasket hanging in the garage that I can't return because the parts place went out of business.
