10mm studs too short for Festiva Mags?

Will I need to put longer studs in or get special nuts?

Festiva has 12x4.5 (or 4.5x12 as the Mini folks like to say) in either steel or alloy.

The alloy are sought after, the steel are of little interest - so I'm thinking alloy if/when I want to get rid of them.

I have the 12mm conversion stuff too, so QUESTION: Are they long enough too?

I think once I have Festiva 4.5's on, I'll never go to a set of OE 4's which means I won't really mind converting to the 12mm to run the 4.5's.

I'm think the 4.5 metal will work OK with Gorilla nuts or with the 12mm conversion.

Thanks
Tom

I have 12" Festiva alloys on my 93 3/5 with 155/80-R12 tires. I just used the chrome lugs that were on my 12" metro steelies and haven't had any problems in the last 6 or 7 years.

This is great news, thanks!

(I talked with one Festiva person and they said they used the same lug "bolts" with either the steel or alloys. Said they used a 14mm leg wrench too which makes me wonder if they were 12 or 10mm bolts?)

I know you are running stock tires, but did you notice the handling was improved with the extra 1/2" width?

Thanks
Tom

EDIT: UPDATE: Finally got the Festiva mags! They are a little bit rough but that was exactly what I wanted. Low cost - $80 for the set. All have tires that are pretty much spent but still have more tread than I have right now because its been taking me so long to solve this wheel issue. So I'll use those tires up first - but will be nice to see if the increased 1/2 inch is noticeable.

Wow, I didn't realize Mags was an obsolete term. I'm 59 and its always been "mag wheels" even though "mag" implies magnesium and aluminum was what was always implied. "Alloys" was never used.

Anyhow, I got them, they're mine, and it'll probably take me 5k miles to use up the rubber already on them (!)

I'm curious if they are lighter than the steel OE wheels.

Actually, for slumming, people are giving used 12" stuff away really cheap. There is a guy that has 7 Fiesta steel wheels w/tires where (4) are 4.5's. If I hadn't succeeded on these mags, I was going to offer him: $10 per 4.5 wheel, $5 per 4.0 wheel and $1 for every 1/32" over 2/32" which is the legal limit for inspection. Looks like that will never happen now.

What I like about the mags is that they are a desirable commodity and easily worth $80 if I need to sell out.

I really need to make a decision now about springs, cutting, lowering, etc. I'm tempted to get some spend struts and plasma out the spring perches and then fab a new ramp profile to mate the pure tangential end you will get when you cut 1-turn off the stock springs. But that is another thread....

EDIT: Or like Mags and 10mm... what that have been 10mm Auto? HaHa

Just put them on and highly recommend them if you are running 12's. If you want lo buck, the steels. The added 1/2" width really makes a difference. (Oh what would a 5 or 5.5 x 12 (as the Mini Folks put it) be like!)

#threads engagement drops from 13 to 8-1/4.

Measurement method: start lug so it is just started (cannot be pulled off), this is 0 turns. Wind on with a speed wrench until snug.

I believe pitch is 1.25 which means 10.3mm engagement.
13 turns is 16.2mm engagement.

I checked TireRack and 8.5 is the min for 12-1.25mm. Since engagement is meaningful as a ratio to diameter, 8.5 on a 10mm stud would be even better.

So I guess everything is OK.

NOTE: Also don't know where I got the idea that the Festiva Lug Bolts were 70deg. They are 60deg just like Metro OE.

Tom

EDIT: Both OE (no hubcap) and the mags weighed 21 lbs with worn out 155-12' on them. If you add the hubcaps, the OE are heavier.

ALSO: Handling is clearly improved. While it could be the difference between the tires, I believe it is mostly the wheels. When you snap the steering wheel, the car really responds with less lag and roll. There are some favorite corners where I normally squeal the tires - now they are silent. Of course that could be the difference in the tires.)

What is interesting is that if you can respond to steering in shorter time, there is less time for F=MA to roll the body. The quicker, the more the body intertia enters into the reaction. Sweet!
