I smile as a type this one up this should be a good one. So I took my vert to have the oil changed just a lil bit ago (I am headed down south to mobile just dont have time to do it myself before I leave) and since my CEL has been on I figured I would have them check it for me to see whats going on. Well I asked him what he came up with and these were the two codes.

-Open Steering column
-Reserve Diode Failure

Never heard of anything like that before does anyone have any ideas? :dunno

A little more background on this car it was an automatic and it seems that the motor is a newer style from what a few guys have told me.

Thanks guys in advanced.

According to my FSM Open in Steering Column is code 26 and History Code 33 is Steering Diode Shorted in Arming Sensor. And you do have air bags?

But my Wife's '96 Geo has air bags and her air bag CEL is red.

Three codes is a little unusual but not uncommon. Might clean the ground wires on intake manifold above the alternator. http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/pp123/BadBent/Repair%20Pics/ground.jpg

The IAT Sensor Circuit has grounds in common with the MAP and other sensors.

Otherwise attack the 3 codes one at a time. How long has the CEL been on?

Check to see if the iat sensor plug is plugged into the sensor at the airfilter housing.

Have you ever tuned it up with new spark plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor? If not, do it.

Perform a compression test on the engine.

Disconnect negative battery cable for ten seconds and reconnect and drive it and see if the codes come back after you have tuned it up and done the compression test.

Ok IAT sensor is plugged in, I have put new plugs in but havent done the cap button and wires. Compression test was done after purchase and as follows.
1-125 2-125 3-98. it was a dry test.

You could possibly have both sets of codes - my 92 has a separate CEL and an airbag light (can't recall what the display shows on the dash) I know you get the engine codes using the spare fuse and counting the CEL blinks, not certain how one access any airbag data...

Well mine does have an airbag light, I had a shop hook a computer to it and thats how i got the open steering column and reserve diode code, but after doing research on here i wanted to check it with the fuse and that's how i got the other 3 codes. I might get a new o2 sensor and IAT sensor to try and clear two of the codes and maybe trace down the problem with the ignition fail safe.

A new O2 sensor is a good idea, especially if it hasn't been done for a while. IAT sensor is the one on the back of the air cleaner housing and is likely unplugged or plug is loose - very common.
