Ok so here is the deal, my geo metro 91 xfi is nearing 300,000miles and is needing rebuilt. It happens that I already have another engine that has less than 50,000miles on it ready to drop in. The one problem I have is pulling the xfi engine out of the car? I have handle those engines before but I had a cherry picker handy and this go around I do not. With that said how hard would it be to unbolt the engine from the car/trans and pull the engine with bare hands (possibility of getting another set of hands)? :hmm

Very do able. But not advised. The engine with the fly wheel and clutch comes out to about 145lbs. There used to be a pic hanging around here, it was of a member hand lifting the engine out of his car. I used the 2x4 ceiling joist in my garage. If you do man handle it. Just be careful please.

Well I might give it a try, if I can't get a cherry picker. And on a side question do you know of any other post that talks about repairing the A arms? Mine has one spot where rust has eaten thru on both side (driver and passenger)

I think most people just buy new arms on rockauto.com or wherever....

I am the one on the left.

You can use a pulley as a makeshift cherry picker- or as another jests, a swing set for a poor boy pulley system.

there have been people on the forum who have welded their A arms- look in the project threads.

ok, well that isnt an "A-arm" then(well, let me correct myself, not what I would call an "a-arm" not sure why people want to call that particular part of the unibody that but whatever, lol) ....thats a common place for them to rest out....I good welder could help you out with patching it up.....some shops might not want to do it because of the liability though.....some people will just call the car totaled at that point....mines got some rust on it and a small hole....Ive got it "sealed" with some rust reformer....if it gets worse, im going to weld it up but it doesn't look like its going to be very fun....I haven't seen a good simple way to take care of it yet.....not a lot to work with there....good luck....

Well I might just pull both out instead of just the engine. And repair everything at once, I really don't think I will won't to pull everything else out again when the rust gets out of control.

The more I think about it, if I didn't have a hoist to use, I would probably support the bottom the motor and transmission with blocks, jack stands, whatever, just support it everywhere I could, being sure not to send a jack stand into the oil pan or something, and I would remove all the wiring, linkages etc, then have a buddy or two come over and I would remove the motor mount bolts as he/they kinda steadied it the best they could, then we could grab onto it and lift out with a guy on each side....A friend and I carried my motor and tranny up to the house without any trouble so two guys can easily handle it.....Also if you have a heavy duty ratchet strap or two, you could also run it around the motor/tranny and around the core support to keep it from moving.....kinda ghetto.....but then again some people might say removing a motor and tranny without a hoist is kinda ghetto.....Ill do whatever it takes to get the job done and not kill anybody in the process. lol........but I also own a hoist......

Sadly i do not, i was laying under the car getting the transmission bolts in, and glenn was trying to help line it up with the transmission shaft.
