I have a 1996 Geo Metro LSI Hatchback and the check engine appears from time to time. Recently, my oil kept leaking but that was fixed by buying a new hose. Apparently, the previous one has a hole in it. So far, my oil hasn't been leaking but the check engine light still comes on. I've had this car since about February 2011 and have been keeping up on the maintenance so far (excluding a minor wreck I had last year which knocked the front headlight off a little). So I'm basically wondering if it would be a smart thing for me to drive it to rehearsals from time and time. It's a 24-26 mile drive (36-44 minutes) and the rehearsals are only like 2-3 times a week. Will I be pushing me little metro if I do this? I just hate to keep riding with someone and giving them gas money that could be going in my car and it's really stressing me out. Thanks!

If the car runs ok, then drive it. Have someone at autozone check the codes and get a print out of them and post them here. If the car is running good to you, forget the check engine light and drive it. Its not going to hurt anything but for optimum performance repair what is kicking on the check engine light. If the car is missing and running rough, dont drive it. Runs ok, drive it and you will be ok. As for the leaking oil, keep it full and keep a regular check on the oil level and do not let it get too low.

:+1 on going to get the list of codes and posting them here.

Use this general rule to figure out if you should drive your car with a light on:

Use the color of the light
RED light. STOP NOW!!!! :O I.E. oil pressure light
YELLOW light. Take it easy and drive with caution. Check as soon as you get a chance. ^o) I.E. Check Engine Light
GREEN Light. GO!! :drivin I.E. shift light

This is not a hard and fast rule but it should help you out! :thumb

Also, Unless I'm forgetting something, We don't have any hoses under our hoods that carry engine oil..... :hmm
What hose did you replace?

Yeah, find out what the CEL is for, easy enough to get the codes. Coming on and off over time is often P0420, just a tired catalytic converter, won't hurt a thing, just prevent you from passing your emissions test.

If the CEL starts blinking, then you should get if fixed NOW.

Thanks for replying everyone! :gp I'm going to go to autozone or somewhere to get the codes checked as soon as I can. To me, the car is running pretty smooth. At least, smoother than my friend's 2004 Impala.

To Stiffchezze: Thanks for the rule! :D Oh and I meant to say that my car kept leaking coolant because I had to keep water in my car to prevent in from running hot. So it was actually a coolant hose that had a hole in in and I had that replaced. My car was actually leaking oil last year but I immediately got that fixed.

To Woodie: I think it might be a tired catalytic converter. If it starts blinking, I'm going to immediately take it to the shop! :drivin
