The 1996-2000 3 cylinder timing belt is much wider than all the previous years. You need to pull off the belt and remove the tensioner and make sure the little notch is in the hole. I also had this issue with my wife's 96 on her "haunted" caterpillar yellow engine. I never did figure out why the timing belt would never go tight and I installed a tensioner from a 98 Tracker 1.6L to make up for the slack. |

Was the second belt you tried made by the same people? I would try another parts supplier and a differant maker of the belt. |

It was. I had a new belt that I found in the spare tire well after I bought the car but not till I bought a new one and installed it prior to the rebuild. The thinner belt came in the rebuild kit. |

I had 0.050" taken off my head and the belt is what most would consider to be very loose.Tensioner is at max. It runs great and I run it up to redline regularly. I would venture to say that most people want the timing belt much tighter than it is intended to be. It is a positive toothed drive and the tensioner is only needed to keep the belt "wrapped" on the sprocket. The timing is determined by the distance between the marks on the tight or drive side of the belt and that does not change even if the belt is very loose on the non-drive or tensioner side of the belt. I have seen numerous posts where people add a "little" more tension because they think the spring doesn't add enough. All that does is shorten the life of the belt. Member 490k suggested to use a 1.3 tensioner. It is larger dia. Probably same as the one JM suggested. Good luck with the belt. |

It worked. Thank you Johnny. Well I finished it up this morning and being this was my first water cooled rebuild I was somewhat surprised when it fired right up and didn't smoke, burp or fart. I followed the guides you guys have laid out here for us and no doubt I couldn't have had this success with out them. Thank you. |
