Hi - just joined the forum. I have had a bunch of 3cyl 5 speed metros - awesome cars. I'm finishing up an original XFI rebuild - the hardest part was rebuilding the right side front control arm mount - which came out really well thanks to persistence and a turbine tech underbody brace for alignment. I'm going to give it a nice new metallic paint job but I do hate painting over the rear hatch XFI decal. This car is running great now. I have had 94 3/5, 92 3/auto - parted out. I currently have running : 92 3/5, 93 XFI, two 96 3/5s,96 4/5 and a 98 4/auto. The 98 has a blown motor with a body in near new condition - no rust; I have two good 4 cyl motors sitting around but I have no interest in the 4 cyl version of the metro.
The BIG project that I've been planning is to convert that 98 auto to a 3/5 using parts from one of my 96s that is rotting away body-wise but has a low mileage engine in it. Theoretically if I unbolt every 96 part that is different from the 98 auto and bolt it into the 98 body - I have what I want. Simple - right? :banghead I'm looking for short cuts and advice if anyone has tried anything like this. What I'd like to try to do is put the 96 engine, transmission, engine wiring harness and 96 ECU into the 98 body and - wouldn't it be wonderful!- if the existing 98 dash wiring harness(es) plugged straight into that 96 ECU? But I doubt that. So what would I have to do ? remove the dash and swap dash wiring harnesses as well - this is the part I hate thinking about. So tell me what you think?
Another question administratively I keep my cars registered in CT and they have a bi-yearly emissions inspection so I'm wondering what complications that would involve - they would need to inspect the car as a 96 even though VIN would identify it as a 98 - anyone had any experience with something like that?
If there is a better place to go in this forum with these questions - please point me in that direction.

Once the XFI is painted and looking "all new" I'm thinking about putting the following message on the rear window:

"1993 Geo Metro EPA 58 MPG -NON HYBRID- manufactured 19 years ago.
WTF is going on in 2012 U.S Auto - did you forget how?"

I wonder if anyone else here shares that sentiment? I can load 1,000 lbs (and have) in my metro and still get in the low to mid 40s. Since they make a 600 hp 6 liter Corvette motor that should scale down nicely to a 50+ mpg 500CC motor - where is that motor? and wouldn't that motor in a metro get even better mpg than the 1 liter metro?

So that should give you an idea who I am and what thoughts pollute my mind relative to an oil/car company conspiracy.

Lastly - I seem to be having a problem at stop lights - hot chicks keep jumping into my metro especially when the windows are down... anyone else having this problem with their metro? :D
Regards,
Jim
