changing crankshaft seal

ok well here we go. i have a 99 metro and as we speak a friend of mine is trying to help me change the crankshaft seal. what happened was my car will no longer hold oil so i was advised that it had to do with the seal considering the check engine light was NOT on nor did any codes pop up when checked. well we have gotten down to the timing belt (mine had a cover on it) but now we are unsure how to locate the tensioner on the timing belt. we have it marked so as to not mess up when putting back together. but now we are having troubles figuring out where the leak is even coming from because now we fill it up and it doesnt seem to be leaking anymore. idk what else to do at the moment lol but she is leaking and wont hold oil. please help!!!!

The crank seal won't leak unless the engine is running. Clean off the area with some Brake Clean, then run the engine and see if oil seeps out of that area.

the rear seal tends to leak on these too. It will dribble out between the engine and transmission.
Let us know when you find the leak location.

Have you examined where the oil is coming from carefully?

You will get a drip with a bad crank seal, but if your engine is puking oil you may have a damaged oil pan or oil pan gasket.

ok well i got the leak fixed. my dad had to send it to one of his mechanics because i could NOT find the problem. i dont exactly know a whole lot about vehicles but i am certainly trying to learn a little at a time. so far so good but it seemed that i could not find the problem this time >< i had a new crankshaft seal to put on it but when my dads friend got done he didnt use the seal i purchased and no one told me exactly what was wrong. NOW however my car is blowing out white smoke from the exhaust when started and it seems to have a weird smokey smell (if that makes any sense lol) coming from my engine. anyone have an idea about that?

White smoke in the exhaust means water in most vehicles, often a head gasket problem.

Could be the head gasket. :-/

It was just worked on and now it smokes. It might be that some oil dripped on the exhaust. That or it could be the PCV valve so check to see if you have any oil in the air cleaner.

Since your new seal was not used (and nobody is talking :-/ ) it may have been that the mechanic changed the cam seal instead and that could have been blown out by pressure in the valve cover due to the PCV valve clogging and the PCV valve-air cleaner-valve cover tube is clogged still. It happened to Moi. How to Change the PCV valve. Just a thought. Or it is indeed the head gasket and you will have oil in the coolant and/or vice versa.
