I recently baught a 1991 Geo Metro from an old co-worker. She kept up to date on all tune-ups, took it to the shop regularly, just had the A/C updated, ect. It runs fine, no problem (aside from it being a 3 cylinder and not liking to go up hills very much.) It runs great. No problems. Tested it the other day by driving non stop (errands) for an entire day, never over-heated, made any funny noises, no funny smells, ect. I THINK I went over a large pot hole. Didn't bottom out, but I guess it may have shaken some stuff up. A little bit later It started to make a small rattling noise on the right side (passenger side) Under the hood. It drives fine! No change in the way it handles or drives. It seems to get louder when I'm idling (maybe from the noise bouncing off the cars surrounding me?) but when I get up to speed (30 MPH + ) I can't hear it. Unsure if it's there or not. I researched some and saw something about the belts rattling (which is exactly where it sounds like it's coming from) and I sprayed belt dressing on it, which actually made it stop for a minute or two. I'm required to go out of town (about 4 hour drive) for the weekend and I'm afraid i may break down. It doesnt seem to affect the drivability at all, but I want to know what it is. It's annoying! Any ideas what it could be? |

First off, Welcome to the Greatest Show on Earth! I think the big bump, and the rattle, is unrelated. Since you sprayed some belt dressing, and it stopped for a bit, I suspect the water pump may be ready to be changed. I'd take the belt off and see if there is any play in the water pump. If there is, replace it.

Is that something I should do before leaving town? I leave in two days! Is it something that could mess up my car or cause me to break down? Also, how do I tell if there is "play" in the water pump? I'm completely car illiterate. |

Yes it could strand you. By play I mean side to side or in and out. It Should rotate smoothly, but Not move up, down, in, or out. Check now. Or as soon as you're off work. If the pump is bad, you have time to replace it before your trip.

Metallic. Its not a thrown rod tho. Drives fine. Advanced auto says it's nothing to.worry about. |

I once had something really similar that was really stupid happen. It rattled like a clink or a metal change noise but very lowly, it got worse at idle. I ended up finding out the prop-rod for the hood wasnt attached to the plastic clip and was just rattling around. Just a thought
