Timin belt doesn't fit anymore...; After 3tech cam swap

I'm at work, so I cannot post any pictures, but I'll do my best to describe my issue...actually the topic title kind of speaks for itself, but here goes.

So, I put my newly machined cam in last night, got it torqued down to 96 in lbs, reinstalled the valve cover, rotated the cam sprocket to top dead center, rotated the crank sprocket counter clockwise to top dead center, and then reached for my timing belt...and it's too short all of a sudden.

If I leave the pully on the water pump out of the equation, it fits, but if I've got that pully in the mix (even at the lowest possible tension setting) the belt will not fit.

Has anyone ever heard of this?

Nothing changed like that. Is your tensioner installed correctly?

Got 70 MPG?

I don't think the pulley diameters are any different throughout the years of these cars, just the teeth design and the width of the gear. Are you sure those cam caps are seated all the way? My only guess would be that the cam isn't sitting in the saddle all the way and it's up higher.

Coche Blanco - I think I did. From what I could tell, there's only one way to stick it in. The tensioner kind of fits into the back side of the pulley and seems like there's only one way to get it on there, but I'll definitely double check tonight when I get to the house.

Starscream5000 - I believe that they are seated properly. When I set them, there did not appear to be a gap between the caps and the valve case (not sure if that's the correct term, but I hope you know what I'm saying).

Nothing else has changed. It is most likely the orientation of the tensioner. Do you have the tensioner arm like in this picture? Do you have the tab on the tensioner arm in the small hole in the back of the tensioner?

clarkdw - work has blocked my ability to see those images. They're really strict about what they'll allow, apparently...and my cell phone is broken so I can't even look them up on there. Good times, good freaking times lol.

clarkdw - I really do think I put the tensioner back on properly. I stuck it on wrong once and then took a minute to figure out how it's supposed to go and made sure that little tab went into the small hole on the back. When I move the tensioner, the pully moves as well, so I really do think I'm good on that, but I know I need to double check it when I get home.

Alpine
1020cc G10 GOML

when i put my timing belt on it was TIGHT

i do this.

put belt on with tensioner off, then squeeze the tensioner on after the belt is on(you have to force belt out of the way with the tensioner, and screw that bolt in quickly)

*edit

let me try to explain it differently.

i had put the belt on without the tensioner, i then put the bolt through, and thread it, it should allow it to fit being so loose(holding the bracket behind it in place before inserting the bolt)

Do you guys agree with Alpine on this one? I'd really like to see a Tech Certified member suggest the same thing before I try it...just sounds risky to me to cram the pully in there since there's at least some chance that I screwed up on the reinstall.

Thoughts?

I'm going to give this a shot when I get home and see how it goes. If it goes well, I'm back on the road...somebody cross your fingers for me...I've been getting 16mpg for 2 months in my Jeep while the Metro has been ill. It's killing me lol!

It'll be fine to do it Alpine's way. just watch out for oil leaks that could indicate something isn't bolted down enough at the cam.

the pulley was installed correctly. i took it off so i could try alpine's idea and guess what...now the timing belt does not fit at all. i cannot get it to go around both sprockets no matter what i do. im beyond pissed off. this effing car has been one problem after another and im getting really sick of pretending that someday it will run again

Slow down.
Have a :beer or a :stoner a :coffee or a :chillpill
Nothing about the timing belt has changed by changing the cam. ^o)
I know your having problems seeing the pic clarkdw put up, so just wait until you can see it, and set all the pieces exactly like in the pic.
----
Did I read that you were tryining to run the water pump with the timing belt? :ermm:
It runs the cam only.
---
We've all been were you are before. It sucks. Take a few minutes and calm down. Go take a look at it in a while, and I bet it will be very simple. :thumb

BTW
Alpines way works just fine. B-)

If you get a min. shoot a pic and we'll take a look. ^o)

lol.

Got my smoke working, I'm chillin a little bit but I'm tired of not being able to follow the instructions...I'm sick of having to detour and take the long way on each and every step, and then come try to describe the problems I'm having with a limited vocab...it's just tough. Plus, I frustrate easily so yeah...my bad. Sorry for venting so intensely.

I wasn't saying I was running the water pump with the timing belt, I was just describing that I removed the timing belt pully from where it's attached to the water pump.

You're probably right, it's gotta be something simple. I'll table this for now and just chill out til later.

Thanks for your help. If nothing else, I've mellowed out a bit for sure.
