Last question. Can I start the car now, or do I have to put everything elseback together first?

Thank you, sir! I can't really take any credit though...most of what I've accomplished on the Metro needs to be credited to the members of this forum.

I genuinely appreciate everyone's help today. I don't think I could have done it without y'all.

Put the crankshaft pulley on. It holds the timing belt on the sprockets. The rest can wait. Just don't run it too long with the waterpump not running.

I had a similar problem with my new belt and new tensioner... I ended up putting the belt half way across the teeth of both the cam and the crank gears, then is would slide behind the tensioner. Once it was behind the tensioner I gently pushed the belt completely onto both gears. Made sure everything was good to go and then started the engine to make sure. Did not run long maybe 30-45 seconds because water pump was not hooked up yet. Its a happy day when the 3 banger fires up!
